"Hey."
Madara released the breath he hadn't realized he was holding. "Sakura. Thank god."
"Yeah, I'm all good," Sakura bit her lip to stamp down the feeling of disappointment from being back in the darkness. She already missed the sun, the wind, and the grass.
"Can you check for Izuna? Where is he?"
Sakura wanted to help, she really did. But she was exhausted. "Sorry bud, I'm out of juice. Let's go back to the village and see if he's there, I'm sure he's sensible enough to at least do that."
Madara nodded in understanding, turned around, and began to walk. He was exhausted too and could only do that much. It wasn't safe enough there to take some time to rest.
Madara's tiredness coupled with hers was more than enough to have her mind and nonexistent body screaming at her to just curl up in a ball and sleep, but when she turned to look at Kin's pale and frightened face, she knew that her job wasn't yet done.
"You alright there, Kin?" Sakura assumed that it was the battle and near-death experiences she has just witnessed that Kin was not quite used to yet causing her blood to drain from her face. "I understand fights can be a bit overwh–"
"Did you also see a black cat on the brother's shoulder?"
"What?"
"Was there a black cat on Madara's younger brother's shoulder? One that seemed to fade away and disappear when we saw him?"
Sakura nodded hesitantly at the same time Madara responded with a small, "Yes." Looking back at it, there had been this shadow-like creature on Izuna's shoulder, and it had looked like a cat.
"Shit." Kin rubbed her forehead before biting down on a nail nervously. "We'll talk about this later I have to go."
"Wait! Kin! What is it? What was that black cat?"
"I can't confirm anything, but if it's who I think it is, we're screwed." With that, she faded and disappeared, leaving the pair in confusion and slight panic at Kin's hasty departure. The rest of the journey was continued mostly silence.
When Madara had begun to near his village he was intercepted by a group of ninja. Once Madara recognized them relief flooded over Sakura, drowning the rest of her emotions. They were safe. The ninja explained that Izuna had come to the village screaming that his brother was in the forest, defending himself against five Senju nin, sending everyone into a frenzy. You see, it's one thing if the younger and weaker son of the clan head goes missing and none of the citizens are panicking about it and pressuring the ninja to go search. But it's a completely different issue if the clan heir is attacked and the entire village is aware of it. And so, seven Uchiha ninja were sent in the direction Izuna had told them his brother was.
Madara's legs went weak and he collapsed, chuckling. "Thank god. Someone needs to carry me because I am beat."
He was quickly transported back to the village and dropped off at his home before the ninja went to report his safety to Madara's father. He barely had time to ensure his brother was unharmed before his mother gave him something to eat and put him to bed to rest and recover.
Aikena padded into Madara's bedroom along with them and plopped herself down on his bed. His mother still wasn't convinced that having a bear cub as a pet was the best of ideas but she had already agreed to letting the creature stay and couldn't take it back now.
"What do you think Kin was on about?" Madara whispered into his mind.
"No clue, but she'll be back. For now, I guess we'll just keep an eye out for anything weird and wait for her." Sakura answered, twirling her hair between her fingers. "Now go to sleep. And make sure you have an interesting dream; I'm in the mood for a good show."
Madara chuckled aloud before falling into silence and eventually falling alsleep as well.
The next morning Madara woke up late into the day. He usually woke up with the sun or right after sunrise, but it was apparent that he needed the rest. He got dressed with his eyes closed–it had become a routine to keep Sakura from commenting on, uh, certain aspects of his body–and went downstairs to find his mother in the kitchen. She smiled and kissed him on both cheeks and his nose.
"I'm very proud of you, my boy." She smiled, pulling him into a hug. "You saved your brother." She calm facade cracked with her voice and tears wet Madara's shoulder. "Oh, how I'm tired of this war. My last two sons... My babies..." She dissolved into tears, clinging to her eldest surviving child.
Madara realized that he had grown taller than his mother. The woman who had always seemed to strong and sturdy, seemed fragile all of a sudden. She was falling appart in his arms.
He wrapped himself around her, putting his face in her hair. "It'll be okay, ma. I'll protect you and Izuna, I swear."
"I swear."
It had been about a month since the incident when Kin finally returned with answers. Madara had been praised by my clan members, given a hug from his younger brother, and had been ignored by his father for not following his commands.
"Yo."
Sakura jumped, still not used to someone showing up in her space. "Hey, Kin!" The blue haired beauty was sitting right next to her suddenly, with her gold eyeshadow, gold jewelry and chains, a white shirt, and faded blue jeans.
Madara stopped sharpening the household blades to turn his full attention to the conversating initiating in his mind. "Kin, what took so long?"
"Oh, you know, just political and security matters. I'm spearheading a search for a rogue god." She paused. "And I get that you're fighting a war here, but get ready for another."
"What?"
"Okay, maybe that's a bit much; he likely won't be making any drastic moves but you gotta watch your brother. The rouge god is my king's younger brother, but he's not quite the prince..." She trailed off before explaining what had happened.
Before the current king, King Teii, took the throne, his father ruled over the world of gods. While King Teii was a good ruler—considered to be one of the best—his father was not. Irrational and emotion-driven, he made many mistakes in his rather short time on top. King Kizu's name would not be written well in future history books.
Shortly after his son was born, a gift given to this world by the beautiful and elegant Queen, Queen Tenrei, the couple had an argument that rocked the entire palace.
No one knows what the argument was quite about anymore, but from that argument another son was born. Only, King Kizu's second son was gifted to the world by the wrong woman.
