Future Plans

The next few days continued as usual. Madara would train a little in his medical and combat skills, sparring with his little brother from time to time. He would meet up with Hashirama and compete with him and teach the steadily growing Aikena a couple tricks in his downtime. Sakura remained as an observer of her former enemy's life, waiting patiently to intervene in any turning points in the boy's life that could possibly change him for the worse.

Little did she know that a big turning point in Madara's life was approaching quickly.

One sunny afternoon, Madara was walking to the meeting spot between him and his unconventional best friend. He had big plans for a cliff climbing competition, leaving Aikena locked in his room to ensure she didn't get in the way of these plans.

Sakura spoke up. "How did you and Hashirama meet? You are both shinobi in a time of war and neither of you knows the other's clan name and yet you two are still so close." She had been living in Madara's head for many months now but had never thought to ask.

"We met by accident, while we were skipping stones. We kind of turned into rivals in every aspect and then close friends when we found out we've both lost siblings because of fights between shinobi. Started talking about our hope for peace and stuff... I don't really know how we became friends, to be honest. But we can't give each other our names because of the shinobi laws."

Sakura had been vaguely aware that the two founders of Konoha had been childhood friends before falling out twice, but never knew the whole story. It had something to do with the war and Izuna dying. She knew that they were from opposing clans but now understood that the only reason they had befriended each other was because they didn't know the other's identity. She could never tell Madara about Hashirama's last name and when he found out on his own, she needed to prevent the end of their friendship.

The rest of the walk was silent as Sakura stayed within her thoughts, leaving Madara to his. Once they had arrived, the pair found the young shinobi waiting by the river. The greeted each other cheerfully before Madara told Hashirama about his plans and led him towards the cliff.

"I've invented a new jutsu."

"Hm?"

"It's a mixture between taijutsu and genjutsu with a little bit of ninjutsu too and you do this and this and..." The Senju excitedly explained to his friend, motioning a number of quick hand signs in the while.

"Alright dude. Which is it? Taijustu, genjutsu, or ninjutsu. It can't be all three. Actually nevermind, I don't really want to know."

"You gotta let me explain though–"

Sakura was pulled out of her thoughts as she felt a familiar flare of chakra not very far away. Someone was trailing them and they had just messed up on their chakra concealing. Madara hadn't noticed but Sakura had. "Madara–"

"Can't." Madara responded to Hashirama, coming to an abrupt stop and looking up. "We've arrived. Time to race."

The view caught Sakura's attention and pulled a quiet gasp out of her, causing Madara to frown and turn away from his friend, who was busy sulking.

"What is it?"

"Its the cliff," Sakura responded, in a daze.

"Yes, what about the cliff."

"Konoha..." Sakura trailed off, knowing nothing she'd explain would make any sense to him and nor did she believe it was safe to reveal the existence of the village to him. "It's nothing. The view just reminds me of something from my past lives." The thoughts of their stalker was lost in the whirlwind of memories and realizations.

This is where Madara and Hashirama would come to build Konoha. This is where her home was. Or will be.

"Ok, whatever." Madara turned to his friend and their race began, ending in Hashirama winning by a fraction of a second.

Once at the top, the boys sat beside each other, resting and catching their breaths.

"Wow, what a sweeping view of the forest," Hashirama commented.

"Yeah, you can see really far," Madara responded, admiring the view of the forest and truly enjoying peace of simply talking to a friend. "Speaking of eyesight, I'm pretty sure you can't beat me. Wanna challenge me?" He grinned wolfishly at the other boy.

"What are you talking about?" He hesitated, "You seem really proud of your eyes..."

"Yeah! Of course I am! 'Cause I got the Sha–" he stopped suddenly. "Shit."

"Madara, don't say anything else." Sakura chastised.

"Why do you care?" His mood quickly turned sour. "You didn't even know about the shinobi rule about not revealing your clan name before this morning." He frowned as Sakura felt his sudden flood of emotions.

Hashirama noticed too. "What's up?"

"Nothing. I guess my eyesight isn't all that great. Nevermind."

"What is it? You're being awfully candid all of a sudden."

"My eyesight isn't that great after all. Or else my brothers wouldn't be dead. I wasn't able to protect them."

Sakura could feel the tears threatening to fill Madara's eyes.

"Madara..." Hashirama's tone shifted, obviously reliving the memories that Madara had unintentionally dug up for him.

"Sorry." Madara realized his mistake but internally patted himself on the back for turning the conversation away from his eyes. "I guess I brought some things up for you too."

"So..." Hashirama shifted his body to face his friend. "Do you have any siblings left?"

"A brother. A younger brother. And I'm going to protect him no matter what happens, I swear. What about you?

"I have one brother left too. And I also intend to protect him at all costs."

The two sat in silence for a while, each lost in their own thoughts. Sakura just silently observed, not wanting to interrupt the moment.

"I've decided." Hashirama raised his arms, his tone shifting again suddenly. "We're going to build our settlement right here."

"Huh?"

"And then we can make it so that kids don't have to kill each other." His smile widened at the thought. "And we can have a shinobi school and restaurants and houses. And a system that allows children to be safe while learning to be shinobi and only go on missions that are at their level so that no one has to die unnecessarily anymore."

A small smile crept onto Madara's face as he thought the idea over in his head. "Sounds good..."

"Then it's done! We'll build it together."

The two continued to chat about their plans for this settlement for a little more before heading back to the river. Hashirama stood on one side and Madara stood on the other. They skipped rocks for a while until it was time to leave. Madara skipped a rock for Hashirama to catch and the other boy did the same.

"You can keep that rock until we meet again," Madara suggested, beginning to turn and walk away.

"You should too."

The two parted ways and Madara began to walk home. It was just then that Sakura felt the flash of chakra once more.

"Madara. Your brother is tailing you."
