His eyes are a shade of green I can't quite put a name to. Muddy, overwhelming, pain might come close, and maybe that's why it seems so familiar. Because his arms, clad in the faded homespun my mother once made, feel like home.
He's a sad, lovely s...
Okay, so I just wanted to take a break in our scheduled programming to say a quick word on where this story goes down. It's set in Tacoma, Washington and there was actually a lot of historical research done to make the story accurate. The house is a real place. It used to belong to my grandpa and he bought it from his parents. It sits in a quaint neighborhood on top of a hill that looks out on Commencement Bay. I found a few crappy real estate pictures on the internet from when my grandpa sold the house ages ago.
This is the house. It was always pristine.

Some shots from the inside. My grandpa was obsessed with the history of the city and the idea of keeping his home historical so I imagine it would have looked relatively similar in 1919.

The port was busy and one of Tacoma's main assets as it started as a logging town. Here is a sketch of the street that both Harry and Pierce would have worked on, which looks relatively similar still today.

And another shot. Downtown Tacoma is full of steep hills.

But all those buildings on 11th St are still there today. This is the Tacoma Hotel where I envisioned Harry working obviously it's on fire in this picture because it burnt down in the 1930s.
