A loud creaking metal door slowly opened, letting a burst of light shine down into the dark basement of the hanger. Foot steps echoed through the hallway as a man made his way down towards the back room where the cells were held. He walked through the slim doorway, standing in front of one of three silver cells.
"Have you thought about my question?" The shady man asked.
Elishah came forward into the light, as he placed his cold hands on the metal bars. "Yes." He said silently.
"Good...now tell me how to create the cure." The man said as his face came into the light shining in from the doorway behind him, as his bright red hair reflected off the light.
-7 hour prior-
The crowd continued to roar as Samuel stood in the center of the crowd. "Now I know some of you didn't want me in charge, and that's okay. I expected that. But this is how life's gonna be from now on. This is how it's gotta be." Samuel said.
James eyed Samuel down as the crowd continued to watch.
"Now I've shown mercy for my brother...but I won't show mercy for the dangers outside this hangar. The people out there are ruthless! They're dangerous. And most of all, they've been out there for too damn long...so long that they can't come back to this form of life. It's a shame, really. But we, here. We are the future!" Samuel shouted as the crowd cheered and roared. He walked out of the crowd and towards his living quarters as James and Lisa watched.
"This isn't right." James said.
"No. This is what these people deserve." Lisa said from her wheelchair. James suddenly heard a silenced gunshot from inside the med tent and the two soldiers walked out with a large body bag.
"He didn't make it." James said, watching the men carry away the body.
"Maybe because these people don't know what they're dealing with out there. But we do." Lisa said.
"There's nothing we can do about this, Lisa. We have no say in the leadership of this place. All we can do is wait for you to heal, and then move on." James said as he brought Lisa to rest in the med tent.
Samuel went into his living quarters and shut the door behind him. He stood there for a minute and wiped his sleeve against his bloody nose. He walked over to a wooden desk and pulled out a handkerchief and began to clean his face. He looked up at a large painting on the wall and began to chuckle at the sight of his father.
"I did it, Dad." Samuel said softly as he continued to chuckle. He walked around the desk and pulled open a small drawer, taking out a bottle of alcohol. He held it up to the portrait of his father. "To the sins of the father." He said as he began to take a sip of the alcohol.
Samuel began to rustle through the drawers of the desk when he suddenly found a locked one. He tugged on it and tried to get it open but it wouldn't budge. He finally began to pry it open with his knife and he finally got it unlocked. He pulled out multiple sheets of paper along with a notebook. He opened to the first page of the book and across the top of the page it read, 'TO THE NEW WORLD'. Samuel read it over and over again as he sat down in the chair at the desk. He continued to read the title until he suddenly fell asleep.
A few hours passed and Samuel woke up. He sat there for a minute and then started to flip through the pages of the notebook. Most of the pages were torn or scratched out until he finally came across one that read 'The Cure.' Samuel stood up from the desk and carried the book to the basement hatch of the hangar. He walked down the dark narrow hallway until he finally reached the cells. Samuel chucked the book into the cell.
"Do you know about this?" Samuel asked, as a hand reached forward for the book.
"Yes." The voice said.
"What does it mean?" Samuel said with a stern voice, but no one responded. "TELL ME!" He yelled as his voice echoed through the dark room.
"No." The voice responded.
Samuel chuckled as he turned away from the cell. "You're a coward...and everyone knows it." He said as he walked out of the room.
Elishah reached out for the notebook and began to read it over.
A few hours passed and Samuel eventually came back. "Have you thought about my question?" He asked.
"Yes." Elishah said.
"Good. So tell me about the cure. How did Dad know about it?" Samuel said.
"He was the one who designed it." Elishah said. "He had connections to the virus and he had connections to a cure. He was fairly close but he grew too old to hold so much knowledge...so." He stopped.
"So??" Samuel said.
"So he handed it down to me because he knew you weren't smart enough to handle it yourself." Elishah said.
Samuel eyed him down, a flame suddenly being lit inside him. "Well at least I'm not the one behind bars!" Samuel said.
"And I wonder who put me back here." Elishah responded.
Samuel scoffed. "Are you going to tell me anything about it?" He askedZ
"No." Elishah said.
Samuel scoffed louder. "No more dinner for a week. We'll see if you'll cooperate with me then." He said as he walked out of the cell.
Elishah sat in the dark, cold cell, playing with the notebook in his hands. He flipped over the book and read a quote on the back of it.
'When the sins of our fathers visit us, We do not have to play host. We can banish them with forgiveness, As God, in His Largeness and Laws.'
