Chapter 1: New Member

Hotarou Oreki's POV

"Oreki-san!"  I  heard Chitanda say my name. What does she want now? I'll just ignore her and keep reading my book.

"Oreki-san!" she said again. Don't pay attention to her Hotarou. Just keep reading your book.

"Oreki-san!"  this time, she tried to face me and there was a slight difference in the tone of her voice. I can hear Satoshi laughing softly on the other side of the table. It's okay. Just read.

"Oreki-san, I have something important to say to you."  she said. I finally gave up and looked at her. Her face lightened up.

"We have a new member!" she said excitedly.  "Oh really?"  I said, not being excited. It's actually a pain to have another member. We already have Satoshi and Chitanda. Not to mention Ibara too. They're all wasting their energy on everything.

"Come on, Oreki-san. You should be more excited! The Classics club is finally growing!" she said.

"Don't expect him to be excited about this. Remember? He likes to save energy, or should I say, being lazy?"  Satoshi butted in.  I ignored him and just kept reading.

"So, who's the new member?" Ibara asked.

"Well, the new member is a girl and she's a freshman." Chitanda said.

"When will we meet her?" Satoshi asked.

"Oh yeah, I'll get her now. Oreki-san, you want to come?" she asked me.

"No thanks." I said. I'd prefer to stay in the clubroom than to pick up the new member. She pouted then walked out of the room.

Later, Chitanda came back with a girl who was almost as tall as her. She seems shy. She looked around the room first then looked at me and smiled. Weird.

"Everyone, this is our new member!"  Chitanda intoduced her.

"Konnichiwa minna-san." (Hello everyone) she said shyly. "My name is Kumiko Takahashi from class 1-C. You can call me anything you like." she said.

"I'll call you Kumi-chan then!" Ibara said while holding out her hand.  "Hi! I'm Mayaka Ibara. It's nice to meet you!"

"I-It's nice to meet you too, Ibara-san!"  she said, shaking Ibara's hand.

"You don't need to use honorifics with me, but you can call me whatever's comfortable for you." Takahashi-san smiled.

"Mayaka-san is really nice!"  she said. 

"Not unless you get on her bad side." Satoshi whispered but also making it loud enough for everyone to hear. Then Ibara elbowed him.  "Baka!"  she said while Satoshi held the part where she hit him.

"Anyway." Ibara said.  "This is Satoshi Fukube." she said while pointing her hands to Satoshi.

"Konnichiwa!"  he said, his hands showing a peace sign.

"Konnichiwa!"  Takahashi-san said while doing a 90 degree bow.

"Which now leads us to Hotarou."  Satoshi said with a mischievous smile on his face. I raised my eyebrow on him.

"Chitanda, would you do the honors of introducing him?" he asked.

"Sure!" she replied happily.  "This is Hotarou Oreki-san. He knows how to solve mysteries but is sometimes dull. He also-"

"Enough."  I cut her off.  "I think she's heard enough already." I said.

"Eh? But why? I haven't even told her everything."  Chitanda said.
