"And...I win!" Collins shouts as he throws his cards up in the air. "Ok Collins I get it, your good at card games, but you don't have to brag about it." I said teasing him. "Ok what should we play next?" He asked. "We've played just about everything single card game ever" I said sighing. "That's true... wanna play monopoly?" He asked
"No"
"Yahtzee?"
"No"
"Life?"
"No"
"Scrabble?"
"No"
"Then what do you want to play Devan?"
I looked at him and started cracking up.
"What's so funny?!" He asked defensively.
I kept laughing, I have no clue what I was laughing about. Everything just seemed funny. While I was laughing, the machine I was hooked up to started beeping faster, and it became harder, and harder to breath. I sat there gasping for air as Collins ran out of the hospital room to find a doctor. I was really dizzy and I felt like I was going to fall over. Two doctors came rushing in and out a breathing mask thing over my mouth and nose.
I laid down and I tried to listen to what the doctor was saying to Collins, but my eyes slowly closed and I fell fast asleep.Collins's POV
The doctor said that Devan might be able to come home in the next few days. But we couldn't go back to Cali until we knew it was safe for him. He is going to have to be in a wheelchair until he gets an artificial leg.
While I was sitting in a chair in the hospital room I got an idea. "Dad, I'm going to the store, I'll be back soon." I hopped up and left the room. I searched my pockets for my car keys. "Where are they?" I said kind of annoyed. I finally found them, unlocked my car and sat in the driver seat. I took a deep breath, I'm still trying to soak in everything that's happening. I started the car and drove to the nearest craft store there was. When I arrived I got out of my car and went inside. I looked awful. My hair was messed up, I had big purple eye bags and I smelled. I did shower but I kept putting the same clothes back on. I went to the paint isle. There was some crayola brand paint, but I wanted to get the really nice paint. I found it. "What?! $15 for just one color?! Whatever, this is for Devan." I grabbed almost every single color there was and put it in the cart. I went to find canvas and got some smaller sized ones since Devan is going to be sitting down, in a bed, or In the hospital 24/7.
I went to check out. My total was $312.44. "So do you like to paint?" The cashier asked. "No these are for my brother. He's in the hospital because he just had his leg amputated." I said trying not to tear up. I gave her my credit card, it took her longer than usual. I couldn't figure out what she was doing. She handed me my receipt, card and bags. I looked at the receipt. "Umm excuse me? Ma'am? I think this is wrong. I was supposed to pay $312 but this says the total is $25"
"I'll pay for the rest myself, it's the least I could do." The lady said smiling.
I left the building and headed to my car. I drove to the hospital and got to Devan's room as quickly as I could. When I went in he was awake. "Hey dev!" I said joyfully to the sight of a happy looking Devan. "What's in the bag bro?" He asked. "Oh... just something" I said handing him the bags.
"Bro! No way!!" He said with excitement in his eyes. "These were the paints I've been wanting for years!! Thank you so much Collins!!" I went over and gave him a big, long hug.
"Collins, come here" I heard dad say. I turned around and went to sit next to him. "$25?" He asked. "Well long story short the cashier paid for the rest" I told dad. He nodded his head "well that was extremely kind of her."Devan's POV.
I pulled all my paints out of the bag 'this is amazing!' I thought smiling. I felt like a little kid on Christmas. I got out my canvas and my really nice brushes.
I started to paint. I didn't know what, but it was relaxing at it took my mind off my leg.
Ive been painting for about 7 hours now and it was 1 am. My eyes were heavy. I looked at Collins and dad asleep in the chairs. "I love you guys." I said quietly. I laid down and closed my eyes. Who knows what tomorrow will bring. But I'm afraid every time I go to sleep I won't wake up.______________________________
