Austin’s POV

When we get to the hospital, they allow me to go to Ally’s room while they run the tests. I tell Trish and Dez to stay in the waiting room for me. I sit in one of the chairs in Ally’s room and watch the nurses stick IV’s and needles into Ally to relieve her. I am worried, but not as worried as before because now I know what they’re doing to her to keep her sustained.

Once all the nurses leave the room, I stand up and walk to Ally’s bedside. She looked the way she did when she was in her coma; beautiful yet silent. I took her hand in mine and caressed her face with the other. I touched the soft, brown curls of her hair. I put her hand to my lips and kissed it gently. Then I noticed the glisten of my own tear stain the back of my hand.

I smiled to myself. “You know, Ally? I always thought I’d be the one lying in a hospital bed one day, 50 years from now. With you by my hospital bed. And a beautiful diamond ring right here.” I hold her left ring finger in my fingers. She seemed so fragile yet stronger than I will ever be.

“Mr. Moon, can I speak with you?” I turn to the doorway to find Dr. Omiat, the doctor that helped us the first time, standing there with her clipboard.

“Of course.” I say, kissing Ally’s hand again and putting it down gently.

“I’m sorry to say that Ally has slipped into a coma once again. But, be grateful that this time it shouldn’t last longer than a few days. The most a week or two.” Dr. Omiat says, reading off her clipboard.

“Are you sure?” I ask.

“Yes. Turns out she has a rare disease that causes comas after a stressful day. Is there anything going on, at school maybe, that would cause Ally to be in distress?” Dr. Omiat asks. I look down, unsure on what to say.

“Yes. At school especially. People are still bullying her and saying things about her.” My blood started to boil at the thought of it.

“I understand if you would rather not tell me, but can I know what they’re saying?” She asks.

“She’s accused of being called a liar for trying to kill herself, people think it’s a hoax, and just today, at Graduation, someone announced to everyone that Ally was a…lying bitch.” I say the last part quieter because of a little boy sitting in a chair beside us outside the other room.

Dr. Omiat nods her head and looks at her clipboard. “Okay, well, I see why it would cause her so much stress to be falsely accused of something like that, especially in her condition. I’ll leave you to be with her. You can stay as long as you’d like.”

“Thank you, Dr. Omiat.” I tell her. She smiles and rushes off. I open the door and close it softly behind me. I could pretend she’s just sleeping. I pull up a chair next to her and take her hand in mine again. I intertwine our fingers together and text Dez, saying him and Trish can come in now.

“Hey, buddy. Are you okay?” Dez whispers, coming in with Trish behind him. I nod.

“Can we sit with you guys?” Trish asks with a smile. I smile back. They pull up chairs on the other side of Ally’s hospital bed. I lay my head next to Ally’s and breathe in her scent. I promised I would protect her no matter what, and I broke that promise. She’s in the hospital. What kind of protector is that?

“Excuse me, Mr. Moon, I’m very sorry, but we’re going to have to ask you to leave.” I was woken up by a nurse shaking me slightly. I looked around and realized I was alone with Ally and the nurse. My head was still next to Ally’s and there was a jacket on top of me.
