after that class ended, she couldn't avoid him.

she would see him the rest of her day, never too close or too far away.

in the halls, in her classes.

it was getting harder to bear.

every day she thought about whether or not she should go to the secretary to change her schedule, but then she realized that she would see him no matter what- he is the most popular person in the school.

she wanted him to notice her so bad. every day she went to bed dreaming of him, and waking up the next day crying, realizing she would never have him.

he was so remarkable, and she was so tall and normal and gangly and ugly.

he was perfect, and she was the opposite.

-

he went through his next two classes, and then he had a couple without amy.

it was a welcome break- she had become way more clingy lately. maybe he would finally get some time to himself.

he walked into history, the one class where he had no friends. the one class where he might be normal.

a thought came across his mind, but he couldn't grasp it and it blew away like a leaf in the wind.

he absentmindedly sat down in the back row, determined to try and pay attention this time and not always think about passes and plays he needed to memorize.

-

why was he in the back row? he was never in the back row.

tristan had sat where she needed to sit, the seat she had sat in for the past five months at this school.

she kept her head down and moved to a seat in the row in front of him, a bit to his right.

she prayed he wouldn't notice her, although all she wanted was for him to.

she got her notebook out of her bag and attempted to grab her black pen too, but it skittered across the floor behind her and landed at his feet.

she almost punched herself.

her checks were hot as she blindly patted her left hand behind her, the slapping sounds of her palm masked by the chatter of the students around her.

her heart stopped as she hit a shoe.

she moved her hand a bit more to the left and hit another shoe, and then a pen cap. she barely grabbed the pen and quickly put it on her desk, exhaling a sigh of relief.

why was it that every time she saw him, she didn't want him to see her? but when she went home she cried because he wouldn't notice her.

she loved everything about him- his smile, his silky hair, his beautiful eyes. everything.

as the class quieted down and the teacher walked in, she pushed those thoughts out of her mind and she started to scribble little doodles in the margins of her page.

she tucked a piece of her hair behind her ear and sighed again.

how would she know in the next moment, everything would change?

-

he felt a soft pat on his foot, and then another pat on his other foot before he felt a long, plastic-y item be pulled along the length of the side of his foot. he followed the tan arm to its source and then the thought that had so quickly flown away on the wind flew back into his mind's grasp.

it was her.

she was right there.

his eyes widened and he looked straight at her back. why was he so nervous about this girl he had never met before? he had talked to girls so many times before.. he had a girlfriend, even!

he just couldn't make himself form words this time though.

the golden-haired girl leaned over her notebook and started to draw a name, but he couldn't see it, even after how hard he tried. he watched her push her glasses up her nose and sigh, obviously content.

he felt something in his stomach but didn't know what it was.

an irresistible urge to hear her voice and know her name consumed him. he grabbed his bag, pulled out his only unorganized notebook and ripped off a bit of paper.

what could he say?

then it all came crashing down on him.

he had every class with her.

he remembered a flash of beauty in his english class; a glare off her glasses in art class; her, hunched over her drawing, so focused, with a hint of a smile on her face; her walking through the halls; her endlessly long legs and tall figure.

why had he never noticed her before?

he wrote down five simple words on that note and crumpled it up and threw it at her back.

she scratched her back where the note had hit her and then felt behind her on her chair. her hand came back up with the paper.

he gazed at her expectantly, waiting for her reaction.

he didn't know why her hands were shaking as she opened it up.

he stretched out his legs and crossed his arms and waited.

she was just staring at the note. did she have a tear running down her cheek?

she turned around and her eyes met his.

they were brown and soft and warm, a bit glassy but still beautiful all the same.

he tried to make those thoughts go away as he looked down at his desk, but he just couldn't.

amy didn't compare; she never could.

this was a type of beauty he had never seen before.

but he had seen it now.

-

she knew it was him who had written that note before she even looked back at him and his sparkling eyes.

just five words.

five words and she felt like her heart was going to soar up into the clouds.

five simple words.

talk to me next class.

all she had ever wanted.

he was staring at her this time. she could feel his gaze on her back and she fidgeted, a bit uncomfortable.

should she talk to him?

she was scared.

good things come to those who wait, but she had waited this long for him and good things hadn't happened.

she decided to talk to him, but she wouldn't tell him her name.

no one knew it except her. she kept it under wraps because she hated it so much.

she didn't know why, she just did.

maybe it was because she was trying so hard to be the what it meant and she had never achieved it.

maybe it was because she wasn't what her name meant, and that made her ache more than words can describe.

her hands were sweaty as she tossed the note back at his feet with one word written on it this time.

yes.
