Chapter Five

I couldn’t fall asleep; the time seemed to be flying by. Thoughts were running through my head; tomorrow I’m meeting the family, I have to write a brief summary of the practice mission for FO training, tomorrow’s my 17th birthday! I hope the family likes me and is easy to get along with, oh I hope my friends aren’t planning a surprise party, ugh! I NEED to sleep!  After putting my headphones in I finally drift off to sleep…

“Ah, there you are. We’ve been looking for you Kaylia.”

“What! Who are you? How do you know my name? Wait. I’ve seen you before… You were on my last mission! You were the lady who tailed me!”

“You are so innocent and unknowing. It’s too funny. I wasn’t your tailer Ms. Bellwood.  It’s been my mission to find and capture you. We need you. You’re time has run out, the…”

“I wake up every evening, with a big smile on my face and it never feels out of place. And you’re still probably working at a 9 to 5 pace; I wonder how bad that tastes. When you see my face hope it gives you hell, hope it gives you hell. When you walk my way hope it gives you hell, hope it gives you hell.” My alarm clock woke me up. Is it really morning already? That was such a weird dream! I wonder whom that woman was and what she was going to say. Maybe I’m paranoid or something, I’m seeing her everywhere! Oh crap. Today is the big day. I’m meeting the family. I’m probably not supposed to wear my uniform; I wonder when I’m meeting them. Maybe Headmaster Morganfeld will tell me at breakfast. Just to be safe I put on my favorite black sweater and pink keds; I have to look good on my birthday! I decided to curl my hair, which for the record takes forever if you have long hair.

I walk out into the living area and I notice something weird. My roommates seem to be nowhere in sight. Oh well, I guess they didn’t listen to me; they’re probably planning a surprise for me! I’m about to leave for breakfast when I see a small, blue, Tiffany’s box on the coffee table. “To my beloved daughter Kay from Dad,” I read out loud. I opened the box excitedly and inside was a gorgeous white gold necklace with diamonds on it in the shape of a K! Oh.My.God. This is absolutely incredible. I can’t believe my Dad got me such an expensive birthday present! I love it!

I started my descent to the dining hall, knowing that I would be way early. It was okay though; I needed some time to think about what lies ahead in today’s event. I was passing by the Headmaster’s office when he quickly stepped into the hallway and told me to come into the office.

“Kaylia, to cover your absence for later today, you are going to say that you are flying out to be with your father. He is in a classified location, so you don’t actually know where you are going and you might spend the night there. The plane will depart at noon; you are expected to have overnight items, and semi-formal wear to meet the family. Are we clear?” Headmaster Morganfeld told me.

“Yes sir. Thank you.” I quickly go out of the office and continue on my way to breakfast. Wait. If the plane departs at noon, that means I’m going to have to miss at least one or two classes to get ready! Oh, I hope my friends and classmates don’t ask too many questions! I get down to the dining hall and grab my usual blueberry bagel with strawberry cream cheese and sit down at my usual table. Okay so I have to miss Gov. Codes and Identity Changing. Oh here comes everyone else! “Hey guys! Good morning to you all.” I say trying to sound cheery.

“Morning birthday girl!” JJ says. “Why are you early to breakfast?”

“I’m just excited for today.” Time to put my cover into place! “I’m actually flying out at noon to meet my Dad in a classified location!”

“Wow, that is sweet. He’s on a mission too!” Abbie excitedly says.

“Yeah, that really is cool. When do you think you’re gonna be back?” Julie asks.

“I’m not entirely sure, since he’s in a classified location I will most likely be spending the night.”

“Ha-ha like that is gonna happen. The school isn’t going to let you leave Kay, you’re not that special.” Chloe says snootily.

“Actually Chloe, Headmaster Morganfeld happened to be close friends with her dad. And since Kay hardly ever gets to see her dad she is allowed to go and visit him whenever she can.”  Abbie states defending me. I shoot her my ‘thank you so much for saving my butt look’.

“Oh, look at the time, we have to get to class!” Julie hurriedly gathers her books and runs out the door.

“Come on guys, don’t wanna be late!” JJ shouts closely following Julie.

I couldn’t concentrate at all during class, who could blame me? In a few short hours I would be on a plane heading who-knows-where meeting some family I have no clue about! Before I knew it, Biochem was over. All right, you can do this Kay. Just go say bye and get packing. You have no reason to be nervous. Oh, who am I kidding, I have every reason to be nervous! I’m just not supposed to be. You learn that as first years, you should have no unnecessary emotions going into missions.

“Hey guys! I have to go pack my stuff now and catch my plane, have fun in class and I will see ya’ll tomorrow!” I cheerily tell my classmates. Before anyone has a chance to reply I’m already running up to my room. Okay. Let me make sure I have everything. Meeting the family outfit- check. Pajamas- check. Traveling clothes/clothes for tomorrow- check. Extra dress- check. Toiletries- check. IPod-check. All right, I’m ready! I put everything in my suitcase and put on my travel wear for today. I’m wearing a white shirt with navy blue stripes and an anchor on it, green shorts, and red Sperry’s. I look cute!

I leave my room and walk down to the Headmaster’s parlor, where I’m supposed to wait for the notice that my plane is ready. 11:55, I’m right on time.

“Kaylia, the plane is ready. Please follow me.” A man tells me dressed in a flight suit; I’m assuming he’s the pilot. I follow him down to the main entry hall he goes over to a light fixture, does who-knows-what and a passageway opens up. We go into the passage and it leads underground and then up to the other side of our lake where the plane sits underground on the runway, waiting for take-off. I was right; the man introduced himself the pilot- Phil Ryan. He couldn’t/wouldn’t tell me where we are going though. I got in the plane to find the co-pilot already was ready. I got situated and the ceiling (or should I say ground) opened above us and the runway rose up. We took off into the sky and next thing I knew, I had already fallen asleep.
