Michael and Jeremy sat outside the seven-eleven where Michael had previously thrown a slushee at Jared's car. It was a little too chilly to be drinking a slushee but they didn't care."So how's having a girlfriend going?" Michael asked, trying to distract himself from Evan.
"It's alright."
"What's wrong? You've been talking about going out with Christine since like, the fourth grade."
"Yeah I know but..." Jeremy sighed.
"What?"
"I don't know, we just don't have a lot in common...sometimes it's really awkward."
'Called it.' Michael thought to himself and laughed a little. "I was gonna say something to you about that but I wanted you to make your own decisions."
"I don't want to break up with her though, but I'm worried she's gonna break up with me."
"See that's the problem with dating, too much worrying. That's why I'm not dating."
"Oh yeah that's why you're not dating."
"Hey!" Michael laughed and pushed Jeremy lightly.
"I'm just saying." Jeremy shrugged.
"I just haven't found anyone yet, but it's fine cause I have plenty of time."
"You sound like you're gonna be a crazy old cat lady."
"Well that's my plan until I find someone who'll give me hugs and drink slushies with me."
"Awww." Jeremy teased.
"Oh shut up." Michael pushed him again.
All of the sudden it started to drizzle lightly and Jeremy looked up. "It's raining!"
Michael nodded.
"Maybe we should go home then."
"Probably. Let's go to my house, we can play Mario Kart." Michael stood up and helped up Jeremy.
Quickly, it started to pour, so the boys started running and laughing.
"MY SLUSHY IS JUST RAIN WATER NOW, NO!" Michael shouted in misery.
"IT'S OKAY WE'LL GET ANOTHER ONE, JUST LEAVE IT BEHIND." Jeremey shouted back as he ran down the sidewalk.
The boys ran as fast as the could, getting soaked in the process. They were on Michael's street, almost to his house. The rain started pouring harder and Michael couldn't really see because his glasses were covered in water.
All of the sudden Michael bumped into someone and him and the stranger fell to the ground. His glasses flew off his face so he did his best to search around for them.
"Oh my gosh I'm so sorry." Michael found his glasses and fumbled with them, eventually getting them on his face. "I'm sorry I really didn't mean to bump into-" Then he was silent.
It wasn't a stranger he bumped into.
He knew perfectly well who it was. It was someone he'd been hoping to bump into for weeks. It was Evan!
"Evan?"
Evan nodded.
Michael was shocked, he didn't know what to say. He pinched himself to make sure it wasn't a dream.
Nope, he was fully awake.
"We've been looking everywhere for you..." Michael had so many things to ask but that's all he could manage to say.
Evan nodded again, in response.
Michael stood up and offered his hand out to help Evan up. Evan took it and stood up too.
"We're gonna go to my house, Okay?"
Another nod, why wasn't he talking?
"Then we're gonna take you back to your mom."
Evan stopped walking. He didn't nod, he didn't do anything, he just stopped.
"What's wrong?"
That's when Evan burst out in tears. Michael hugged him tightly. "Hey, hey it's okay. It's gonna be okay."
"No it's not." Evan whimpered quietly.
"It will, come one, let's go back to my house so I can call your mom."
Michael and Evan walked slowly back to his house, Michael doing everything he could to not ask all his questions at once. He wanted Evan to tell him when he was ready.
They got inside, both soaking wet. Jeremy had gotten here before them, not knowing Michael had bumped into Evan.
"Jeremy?"Michael called out.
"I'm upstairs getting towels!"
"Can you get an extra one?"
"Sure, how come?"
"For Evan."
Jeremy came running down the stairs and froze when he saw Evan. "How...when...what?!"
Michael laughed a little and gave Evan a towel. Evan wrapped up in it, hiding his face slightly, and sat on the floor.
"Can you watch him while I call his mom?" Michael whispered to Jeremy.
Jeremy nodded and sat in front of Evan as Michael left the room.
"Where is he going?" Evan asked quietly.
"He got a phone call so he's just gonna go answer it real quick."
"Oh...okay."
"Hey Evan?"
"Yeah?"
"I'm sorry I was mean to you before you left. I was just jealous...but you're a really nice kid and you didn't deserve it."
"It's okay." Evan nodded.
Michael returned with his phone in his hand, and sat next to the other two on the floor.
They waited in silence, until a few minutes later there was a knock at the door. Michael stood up to answer and Evan hid under his towel more.
When Michael opened the door Heidi was standing there, looking incredibly anxious to see her son.
"Here you can come in." Michael stepped aside and she walked in. He pointed to the little towel blob that was Evan.
"Evan?"
Evan turned around quickly and stared up at his mom. He stood up and Heidi instantly hugged him tightly, despite the fact that he was still soaking wet.
"Let's go home baby."
Evan nodded, Michael couldn't tell if he was crying or not but he probably was. Michael would be crying if it were him.
"Thank you so much boys, you have no idea how much I appreciate this."
