Sarah stared at him, but he didn't appear to be joking. "Ano 'yan? Ibig kong sabihin, Narinig ko na ang tungkol sa Navy SEALs, pero hindi ko masyado alam ang tungkol sa kanila."
He relaxed a little. She didn't know much about them.
This was one of the reasons he'd chosen to come back to the Philippines. Over here there was none of the things which he'd lived with since the age of eighteen.
"What is a Seal?" he joked, the way he always did. "Well, we root and toot and parachute," he said. He saw her look of complete disbelief.

This time Matteo did laugh.
He guessed that type of discrimination would be very important to her. One of the ratings certainly wouldn't be good enough for Miss Beautiful Sarah.
"Yes, Ms Sarah," he answered seriously. "I was an officer."
That explained a lot.
The strength. The resourcefulness. The cool confidence in a crisis.
The body, of course, hard, perfect muscle like it was the result of years of training.
She had been right. You didn't get to look like that if you just frequented the gym, no matter how often.
The US bit explained the accent. It explains the ease with which he spoke to her.
"Ikaw ay isang Filipino-American?"
Her body language was relaxing into the conversation. Maybe he would talk all she liked. If that was what it took to loosen her up.
"Half Italian and half Filipino," he said. "Or maybe neither. Nangyayari 'yan kung minsan kapag nasa pagitan ka ng dalawang kultura." He saw her interested, curious look.
