The insistent ring of the cell phone penetrated Sarah's subconscious. She reached out a hand and her fingers connected with the receiver.
"Sarah."
Inches away from her ear she recognized the feminine voice.
"Mommy," she acknowledged the caller.
"Nasa kama ka pa rin, Anak?" There was a slight pause. "Alam mo ba kung anong oras na?"
Seven, maybe eight. She took a quick glance at the bedside clock before drawing a sharp breath.
"Nine."
"Nag-iisa ka lang?"
Sarah closed her eyes, and then opened them again. "Opo, Mommy. Bakit po?"
"Naisip ko kung pwede mo kaming bisitahin ngayong tanghali para sa isang simpleng selebrasyon."
"Opo, Mommy. See you at twelve." She replaced the receiver and rolled onto her stomach.
