The rain was seeping into Sarah's face as she pulled her bag over her shoulder.
Once inside Matteo's condominium she looked around. As if recognizing for the first time that the end of the job really was in sight.
It was amazing the difference she had made. Transforming the place into something unrecognizable from the bland and dingy unit, it had been.
The strong, vibrant colors had worked out even better than she had anticipated.
The rich sapphire color emphasized and reflected the living sky outside. The dimensions of the room were dramatic enough to take it.
Even Matteo had agreed.
"Some people lack the ability to see what possibilities a place can have," he said. "You have that ability. It's a gift, Sarah. It looks so different."
Maybe he would let her buy a few more prints. She could find a few posters of Cebu or Italy, maybe. He had spent a few years in Cebu and he liked cooking Italian food.
Maybe she could even get away with a large, leafy plant in the corner. All places are supposed to have living things in them.
She's wondering what Matteo's reaction would be to a soothing and therapeutic aquarium.
She then saw a letter on the kitchen table with her name written outside the paper. Something told her something was wrong.
Has something happened?
Where's Matteo?
She took a deep breath. She picked up the letter and read.
Hi Sarah,
I had to fly out to New York this morning. Call Ivan if you need anything.
Matteo
He's gone. For how long, he didn't say.
Will he get in contact with her while away?
She hoped.
"Well, sa palagay ko kailangan ko ng matapos ang trabaho ko." Sarah said to herself loudly.

Sarah crossed to the bedroom and moved the drapes a little so she could see the night sky. She stared sightlessly at the stars.
It had been a week since Matteo left. There were phones and texts and you could even send an e-mail from anywhere these days. However, Matteo hadn't, and it wasn't difficult to work out why.
Maybe it is just the way he is. He will not be owned, possessed, or constrained.
He's a free spirit, and the moment he thinks he's in danger of being tied down, or tying himself down, then he just cuts and runs.
Sarah felt she had committed the cardinal female crime of wishing for something and then imagining that it was coming true.
She had wanted him to feel something deeper for her, as she had for him, but it was clearly obvious that he didn't.
He certainly did not offer her any explanation about why he left without so much as a goodbye.
I'm out of his place now, so probably out of his life, Sarah thought.
This maybe is the way he is using to break it off without having to go through the discomfort of telling her.
Their supposed relationship was based on mutual understanding and respect. Exclusively dating. No time limit.
It was as long as it takes.
She leaned back and closed her eyes. The tears she had been holding back finally flowed freely.
