Jungkook continued on marching to the beach. As he neared the shore, he already couldn't contain his excitement. He walked on and on, all the while playing with the pendant of his shell necklace.
He does this every night, when the moon and the stars shine at their brightest.
After reaching the sandy ground, he started to run towards a big rock, a very heavy boulder placed by the line where land meets the sea. He places the basket he's holding there before carefully laying down on the hard surface, closing his eyes. He didn't mind the hardness, for this was where he truly feels the union of two realms, the sand and the sea.
He remembers the first time going here, finding the necklace he's currently wearing, shining under the pale moonlight. It looked somewhat magical, which enticed curious little Jungkook to pick it up and carefully place it inside his basket.
It turns out that the jewel on the pendant among the shells in the necklace was one of its kind, as he brought it to the village jeweller and even she had no records about the rare jewel. Jungkook has had unknowingly picked up a prize.
He stares at the surf, the waves that endlessly kiss the shore and the seafoam they leave. He breathes in the cool sea breeze smelling of sea salt. Then he looks up at the sky full of twinkling stars.
He gazed at the moon. It casted a soft light down on him which didn't fail to calm his senses.
Jungkook closed his eyes and wished upon the stars.
"I wish to be able to protect and to love a mer. I promise to love them with all my heart." he whispered fervently, like he did for the past couple of years.
After a few moments, he sighed. Nothing has happened.
"The mers are probably afraid of me." he said to himself.
Looking back, it has been about two years since he started going to the beach. And there hasn't been any progress at all after all his efforts. None at all.
thank"Maybe the mers hate me." he thought.
It wasn't impossible. After all, humans like him have been cruel to the mer race. Chances are high that they hate him too.
He never wanted to be hated, which was why he was always kind to everyone. But he did not understand why they would hate him for something he did not do.
He wants to love and to be loved. He wants to protect everyone he loves.
And he has sworn to love them no matter what.
...But what if they aren't even real?
Tears welled up in his eyes. It hurt Jungkook even more to think that he doesn't actually know that mers exist. For all he knows, it could just be a stupid story his mother made up to get him to sleep that night. It actually made him wonder why his mother would be just as enthusiastic as him when he comes here. Maybe she hates him, too, which is why she's as excited when he goes away.
Tears fell from his eyes. He couldn't believe just how foolish and gullible he was to continue doing this after all these years. The amount of sacrifice he made to go to see the sea every night, even when he was so tired from his daily activities.
Oh, the efforts he made to meet someone he wasn't even sure exists.
Tears kept on falling. He couldn't stop them at any moment now.
Believing that something exists even without strong proof? Only fools do that. Oh, what a fool he is. Even more so, now that he remembers that they were just legends. They aren't real.
It just hurts too much, worse than than any heartbreak he had ever experienced in his early life.
Because for once, he loved someone who didn't love him back.
