What have I gotten myself into?

Jungkook stared at the pendant tied around his neck for too long that he didn't notice his best friend Hoseok calling him. The older slapped him playfully- but a bit harshly to which he responded to with a pout.

"Why did you do that, hyung?!" he whined as he touched his cheek.

"Yeah, well, you didn't even know I was here for the past two minutes, are you even kidding me?" Hoseok grabbed the chair next to him and sat down, crossing his arms.

"Did I?"

"Yes, you seem to like that pendant very much," he said, motioning to the charm on Jungkook's collar which he instinctively clutched in his fingers.

"It's pretty, right? I actually discovered something today!" the younger squealed while clapping his hands. Hoseok groaned in annoyance.

"Do you still believe in them, Kook..?" Hoseok asked while putting a palm to his forehead dramatically, earning himself a playful jab from the younger.

"Seriously though.." the orange-haired lad straightened his seat as he asked again. "Do you still believe in them, Jungkook?"

Jungkook sighed.

"You know how important this is to me, right hyung?" he said exhaustingly.

"Yeah, but.. it's been ten years, don't you think it's time to.." Hoseok trailed off.

"I understand. I just- it's hard to forget them. And I feel like I'm way closer to them than I ever was."

Silence came among them for a while until Hoseok spoke.

"I think you're doing a great job, Kook. Just, don't forget your limitations I guess.." he trailed off as he stood up from his seat, ruffling the younger's hair.

"I'll be going to my next class, call when you get home, alright?" Hoseok said as he walked away.

A quiet "okay" was whispered by the younger as he looked at his retreating best friend's back.

He sighed once more before fixing his things in his backpack. He returned the book to its shelf then proceeded to go home earlier.

He walked his way out of the school and along the short distance from it to his home. The walk was just a kilometer and a half long, so he can enjoy trudging by the seashore, seeing the breathtaking view as he did.

It was nearing sunset at the moment. He decided to take his time walking so he can bask in the rays of the sun before it came back to its resting place after a long day of shining.

As he walked he heard soft tunes emanating from a nearby boulder. He got startled as to where the song was coming from.

But as he got closer, the songs gradually went to quiet cries. It sounded like a child's cries, but of someone with a much deeper voice than a child.

He quietly approached it, curious as to what was happening. He held a part of the rock, which was slippery but he held still. He peered silently, seeing a boy who looked somewhat older than himself.

Oh.

Why was he crying?

He investigated more and saw the glistening tears on the boy's cheeks.

Were they.. golden tears?!

As if he couldn't get any more surprises, as the tears fell, they hardened into what seemed like tiny white round objects resembling small pearls, dropping down onto the fine sand.

His momentary astonishment led him to losing his balance from his hold on the slippery ridges and plummeting down to the sand next to the crying boy. He couldn't comprehend what he just saw..

He's a mer?!
