Jungkook stood up and brushed his pants off of any sand. Crying won't do anything. That's why big boys don't do that, he thought. He wiped his tear-stained cheeks and took steady breaths to calm himself down. Inhale. Exhale. Inhale. Exhale.
He looked at the starry sky and at gazed at the pale moon. It emitted off peaceful rays, which did not fail to calm him.
His mind wandered off to the mers again. If they were truly existing, guess he couldn't really blame them, as they just feared for their safety after everything that has happened.
If they do not exist, it's his fault for believing that they do. Why didn't he notice what his mother has said? They're just legends, there is no proof.
Maybe she was more than willing to help him because it would help her to peacefully do her work in cooking foods and creating decorations from shells. She sells these things to earn even just a little to be able to provide for Jungkook and herself.
Jungkook knows just how much her mother loves him, and he understands if his mother did this so she would not be distracted when she's doing her work. After all, he was a very happy child who always got bored and needed to always find something to do. Also, all of the work she accepts to do is all for her son.
Although, after a couple of years of going to the beach every night, something about him has changed a bit. It made him patient and more understanding. Well, it is because he would constantly remind himself that the mers were just shy. Until he noticed what was wrong.
Still, he believes all his efforts weren't wasted. He loves his eomma too much that he just chose to understand her reasons.
He carefully goes down the boulder, holding his now empty basket on his left hand. He scales the tall rock with caution until he reaches the bottom. He jumps into the sand and giggles at the sensation it made when his toes felt it. He slipped away quietly, up into the pavement and looked back again longingly at the sea surf.
"Guess I need to let go of you, dear mer." he whispered to the wind.
He smiled to the sea as he walked farther and farther away from the shore.
Little did he know, a certain someone looked at his retreating back with tears streaming on his face.
Two years ago...
"Where did I leave it again?" a little boy asked no one in particular as he looked for his necklace. "Jin hyung is going to kill me!"
He sighed. This necklace is very important to him. It's one of his most prized possessions as it's the necklace especially made for him when he was born. No necklace is like it, for it is something that only he should own.
He thought of all the places he went to throughout the day.
"Let's see.. I went to the cavern... to the cave..." he thought and thought until it finally dawned on him.
"The beach!"
He remembers going to the beach just a while ago. There was this really high rock in the middle of the sand and the water, on which he layed on. Maybe it fell when he laid down.
He hurried on to the shore where he last went. It's perfectly safe to go there at this time because humans surely are already sleeping.
He swam really fast until he arrived to his destination. He quietly swam to the boulder because no, he's not taking any chances. He doesn't want to be like his ancestors who were caught by the cruel humans.
But, he still believes that not all humans are cruel. In fact, he really wants to meet one someday and be their friend. He wants to be a friend to humans again, like they were before.
