Jungkook kissed his mother's cheek as he bid her goodbye. His mother saw the growing bags under her son's eyes and sighed.

"Son, I think you should rest for today." She said as she ruffled through her son's locks lovingly. But Jungkook shook his head.

"No, Eomma. I need to study hard so I can enter that university..." he trailed off, which made his mother sigh once more.

She knows the exact reason why Jungkook decided to go to that particular university known for having top-of-the-line facilities for marine biology. Just the thought made her feel bad. He need not exert this much effort for his dream after all.

Being considerate as she is, she let her son do as he wishes. After all, though unknowingly, Jungkook is doing a great job in welcoming his fate.

..........

After walking a short distance Jungkook finally reached his school. Nothing eventful happened today aside from his zealousness in studying and getting good grades. He knew he needed this. He needs to find them... or even just one of them.

He made his way to the library as he had always done since the last time he went to the shore. Just because he isn't sure they were real doesn't mean he's not going to try proving they were. He doesn't even know why, he just feels the need to. Something in him pushes him to do so.

He flipped open the cover of an interesting book he found since the library added more books to the shelves. The title read:

"Myths and Mythologies: Revisiting Storybook Creatures"

The title itself was truly catchy. He sat down on a nearby seat and scanned the table of contents where he immediately found what he was looking for.

pages 195-197: Mermaids

He read the paragraph on the page he was directed to.

"Mermaids or mers are sea creatures that are believed to be able to grant the wishes of any person. They are capable of manipulating a person's fate according to his or her wish.

Every mer is bestowed a charm upon his or her birth which to people may look enchanted. Which, in some way, isn't false, as a mer is tied to this charm. It is imprinted to the mer in a way that distinguishes it from other mers."

Jungkook instinctively reached for his necklace- the same necklace he found on a boulder at the beach- hanging on his neck. He continued to read.

"The value of the stone in the charm identifies a mer to his or her family. A copper piece may lead one to middle class roots, carbon may speak of the lower class, and rubies would speak for the higher ups."

"Hmm, this is interesting.." Jungkook trailed off. "But how do I know if this is true?" he asked himself. He closed the book and returned it to its proper shelf.

He inspected his pendant, twirling it between his fingers, all the while noticing the blue diamond beneath the chiseled black opal leaves surrounding it.

"What have I gotten myself into?"
