I flinch at the cold needle as its pressed into the crook of my neck. I hear my instructor suck in a deep breath before speaking softly "The trick is to not show any fear during this part". As she says this she looks down at me for acknowledgement. I stare back up into her dark brown eyes as she instructs me. The crackle of the loudspeaker breaks us from our gaze.
She takes the needle from my neck as her official's voice comes through the speaker; "Via" he says grudgingly "Stop wasting time". With that the announcement is over.
Via, my instructor, shakes her head and her dark violet curls shake along with her. She's a curvy woman with beautiful tan skin. She sighs and mumbles in her soft melodic voice "Its always the eyes that get me". I furrow my eyebrows at this statement and speak "Why is it so difficult?".
She turns and fixes me with a look of pure hatred but immediately softens. "I always put myself into their shoes" she says delicately. I shiver at her words and instantly am reminded of all the screams that come from this particular building on that day.
"So you give them the choice" Via announces, breaking me from my thoughts. She carries on "Neck or forearm. Have them make their choice and then follow through effectively. Do not pause or be reassuring". I look up at her then and ask "So I can't calm them?" Via smirks and fires back "Nope".
I laugh slightly at Via's playful attitude.. Via shakes her head before she slips "Skylar... you have to get this down" she says tersely. She then hands me the needle to practice.
"Forearm or neck?" I ask, my face giving off no emotion just like I was told. Via replies back with "Neck please". I obey her orders and slowly press the tip of the needle into the crook of her neck. As I pull away I hear the crackle of the loudspeaker again. "She's ready, send in the first" the speaker promptly shuts off. Via sends me a smile and slowly backs away and shuts the door. I sigh a breath of relief as her presence fades.
Almost immediately the door on the other side of the small, white room opens. I look up and meet the eyes of my next victim.
