Demetri's POV:
With Sky gone I'm nothing. I'm moping around and wondering what she's doing in that freaking hell-hole. I couldn't imagine being there. To many memories, to many.
After zoning out while looking at the door I glance over at our dining table. My heart aches a little when I see the extra chair. Sitting there untouched as if it was waiting for a certain someone to come back.
For so long I was waiting for Gabe to come back. For him to walk through that door with a huge smile on his face. He would stay with us and be the big brother we need. The backbone. It would be perfect, a fantasy.
But it wasn't.
He never came back, they did. They came to us to inform us that he didn't pass the test. They didn't like what he remembered. So they did away with him like they do with all of their criminals. Except they were wrong.
And he is still dead.
As I pull myself out of my memories I am stunned to find tears rolling down my cheeks. I quickly wipe them with my sleeve as my sister pads down the stairs.
"Mom says you need to leave" she whispers.
"What-Why?" I sputter at Jena.
"Because you aren't supporting us from staying home every damn day" my mothers voice comes from the top of the stairs, startling us.
"I'm looking Mom, I've been out looking for work three times this week" I say pathetically.
"No wonder nobody's hiring ya, you are a fuckin' screwup." she slurs in her drunken state.
"I'm sorry, nobody needs work" I say with a squeak.
"Nobody wants you because you are a pathetic monster" She roars.
"Mom!" Jena squeals.
My mother turns towards Jena in a rage. She stalks towards her and curses when Jena runs behind me.
"I dont have any damn time to deal with you tonight"
"Mom please" I plea.
She comes towards me and I flinch at her hot stale breath.
"You knew he was in that memory and you fuckin' let him die" she spits out.
Tears jump to my eyes as I clear my throat to respond. "He didn't do it, it was a mistake"
Anger flashes in her eyes as she registers my words, in her fury she slaps me across the face. Jena hardens her grip on my hand as my mother speaks again.
"Dont- Dont you dare, talk to me about mistakes" with that she walks over to the stairs.
She starts walking up and Jena and I breathe out a sigh of relief. My mother turns and calls out over her shoulder at me.
"Go find some work and learn how to be a man and fuckin' provide for your family"
Once I hear the door slam over us I quickly kneel down to Jena. She places her little hand on my cheek and I suddenly become aware of the stinging sensation that is in my left cheek.
"Mommy hurt you again De" she says glumly.
"Yeah baby, I know"
"Why does she hurt us?"
"She drinks her problems away, and gets violent."
"That's crap"
I stare at my little sister and scold her for cursing. "Dont use those words"
She giggles and replies with "But you do it"
"I'm different. But you shouldn't curse this young. Dont you wanna be like Sky?"
"I dont know" she says after thinking about it.
When I dont respond she speaks again, much quieter.
"Why does mommy call you a 'screwup'?"
I take in a deep breath as I prepare to answer this question.
"I am, she's right. She always is. Jena I need to provide for you both. And I can't. And it freaking sucks. We are scraping by and it shows. I am so sorry that I can't give you the princess life that you deserve. I just can't but I will try"
She takes in my crying state and leans in to hug me.
"Do you ever miss them?" she whispers into my neck.
I peel apart from her and look her dead in the eyes.
"Absolutely, every single second of every single day"
"Me too" she says, her brown eyes clouding over.
She looks nothing like me. Black hair, wavy, like she just came out of the shower. And brown eyes that stare into your soul. She reminds me so much like him that it hurts.
"Mom wants you to leave" she says suddenly, panic creeping into her voice.
I contemplate leaving her here and give her a choice.
"No! I wanna go to Sky's house and play with Jax"
I grin widely at her innocence and take her hand. Standing up I tug her over to the door.
Once we step out I feel the brisk autumn air wash over us. I instantly take in a deep breath and wipe the tears that were streaming down my face earlier.
I feel a squeeze on my hand and look down at Jena. I smile at her and shut the door.
Together, hand in hand, we walk down to the Skylar's house.
