I could recognize that voice anywhere. I turned around and was faced with Kody.
His bright brown eyes pierce my hazel ones as he steps forward. I wrinkle my nose at his presence and motion to the chair.
He heavy sighs and sits. "Neck or forearm?" I mumble.
He smirks at me and leans back with his hands behind his head, "Neck please Sky".
I suck in a breath and prep the needle. As I do so Kody speaks; "When didja start working with them Skylar?"
"Its my first day" I scoff.
"Are you gonna get the benefits?" he then asks seriously.
I glare at him then and he returns by raising his bushy eyebrow.
"Shall we continue?"
"Sure, but its gonna be fast... I was a good boy this year" he says playfully.
"I see"
I move in closer and point the needle at his neck. I slowly press it into him and watch his eyes snap shut. I lean back in my chair and study the boy in front of me.
Kody is a 17 year old boy with dark brown hair that seems to be styled in a permanent small quiff. His tan skin has absolutely no imperfections. He's gorgeous, and he knows it.
We have gone to the same school for years. Him being one year older than me I always looked up to him.
All that changed on my 15th birthday. I wanted my best friend to be there. But where was Kody when I wanted him most?
Getting drunk with his buddies.
I was heartbroken and he knew it. He tried his hardest to make it up to me and he did, but I never forgot.
We grew apart as the months rolled by, he became worse over time.
His mom would often come over and cry about how her baby was headed down the wrong path. His mom was a frail thing. With coarse brown hair and heavy set eyes.
Kody and I often joked about how he came from her. But I absolutely adored the woman.
I'm broken from my thoughts as Kody stirs. He opens his eyes and smirks at me. He reaches forward and tugs on a strand of my curly dirty blonde hair, something he always did as a kid.
"Do you ever miss me Sky?"
"Uh-Er, yeah. I wish you didn't mess it up sometimes"
"I didn't mess it up" he says standing up. I stand with him and walk to the door.
"I know, I know." I whisper to myself as I pull open the door.
As he walks into the hallway he turns to me and smiles my smile.
A big, goofy, and cheesy grin.
It makes my heart hurt, and I hate it. It just reminds me of all the pain. Of my best friend transforming into a drunk right before my eyes.
I shut the door and lean against it. I massage my temples and momentarily push away a headache that is appearing between my eyes.
My head snaps up as someone attempts to open the door I'm against. I quickly stand and move just as Via and a man step into the room. She looks at me and gives me a excited thumbs up. I laugh and look at the man who I'm assuming is her boss.
"Congratulations Miss Wes." he says in a gruff voice. His voice surprises me considering his wiry frame. He has thinning blonde hair and plain brown eyes, nothing compared to Kody's.
I gasp at what I just though and quickly pull myself together.
"Thank you sir"
"Its Mr Embrum, Skylar" Via pipes up.
"Oh its quite alright Via" he says putting his hand on Via's shoulder.
Via tenses but quickly recovers at her expense. "Well Miss Wes you are free to leave, we will get back to you soon." Via's boss says. "Thank you sir, I appreciate your time"
I walk out of the room and return my lab coat to the rack. I smile at the receptionist as I walk out into the brisk autumn air.
I take a breath and am overcome with the putrid smell of factory smoke.
I start walking down the lane and am face to face with one of the many unfortunate people in this world. It's a woman much like the one I tested today. I quickly smile at her but break our gaze and hurry out into the street.
I quickly run down the sidewalk leading to my mothers house to tell her the news.
A/N: So I'm getting to the part where I tell you more about Skylar and her life. Trying not to make this like all the others so I'm jot sure Kody will be a love choice but I'm not positive:) And you will learn all about the tests in {hopefully} the next chapter ~Sierra
