Note: I had health in 7th grade, I can't remember exactly how CPR works, and I'm too lazy to google it. Sorry.
Scott
A scream erupted from below the lifeguard stand and Scott shot up, sitting up straight. He was instantly alert, although it could just be some girl screaming because her boyfriend picked her up and threw her in the water or something. That was usually the case, and Scott had grown accustomed to not being too worried. He peered down from the perch and everyone was standing, looking into the water. Scott scurried down the ladder and immediately ran to the shore. He tore off his 'Malibu Beach lifeguard service' tank top and threw it on the ground, ready to jump in the water.
A guy who looked 15, maybe 16, ran up to him, a panicked look on his face. "M- my cousin Mitch, he's in the water, he's drowning, he can't swim that well!" The guy said, and that's all Scott needed to hear. Scott ran into the water, as well as you could run in water at least, and once he was in deep enough he dived under and began swimming. The guy drowning had neon pink shorts on, which was convenient for Scott, and he spotted him easily.
He reached the boy and he was struggling to breathe and stay at the top, sputtering for air. He was thrashing around and kicking, very nearly kicking Scott in the gut as he reached him. Scott grabbed his waist and held him up, but Scott could hear him gagging still, and then silence. Scott began panicking and grabbed the boy in a headlock, wasting no time in beginning his journey to shore.
The journey was short, but Scott wasn't done yet. He picked the boy up bridal style and ran farther up the beach, laying the Young man gently on the stand. He placed his ear on his chest and heard nothing, no heartbeat. He gasped, and paying no attention to the people crowded around him he started doing CPR on the guy. He tilted his head back and pinched his nose, and reached down, blowing air in his mouth. When their mouths met, Scott felt something swell up inside of him, and he knew there was something special about the boy in front of him. He had the sudden urge to do everything in his power to save him. He knew he couldn't lose him. He was too meaningful. They'd never met before, and yet Scott knew he was special. He knew it. He pulled his head back and put his ear near the young man's mouth, still no sign of breathing. He repeated the process again.
And again.
And again.
And again.
And again.
After 5 minutes of doing CPR he heard murmurs of 'he's dead' coming from the other people attending the beach. Scott grit his teeth- he wasn't going to let him die. Not if he could still prevent it. He leaned down to do CPR again but was taken aback when the young man coughed loudly, making loud gasps as he tried to compose his breath. He looked around and stood up quickly. Considering he had just nearly died, the head rush he got was overwhelming and he almost fell over, but Scott reached out to catch him just in time.
Scott held him in his arms and they stared into each others eyes for a few minutes. The young man smiled, his breath still uneven. He moved his head up and pecked Scott lightly on the lips, making Scott's heart flutter. "You saved my life. Thank you, I'll never forget this," he said, still slightly breathless. And with that he walked away, Scott staring after him helplessly.
"Thank for saving my cousin," The guy from earlier said, clapping Scott's shoulder before following his cousin up the beach.
As the crowd disbanded, all Scott could think about was the beautiful boy who had slipped through his fingers.
