_______

Awkward.

I cannot stress this enough.

The beginning of my time with Zach after his complete meltdown at practice can only be described as awkward.

Keyword: The beginning.
_______

It's funny how Lauren was supposed to quite dance, but she's almost more involved than I am at the moment. The look she gave me when Zach and I walked out the rusty door was unreadable. With no doubt she'll have a good bit to say to me when this weird experience is all over.

I didn't really have a plan when I led Zach to Lauren's car and told him to get in - yes I do understand that taking Lauren's car probably made things worse but I had no intentions on going anywhere within walking distance.

Zach kept quiet as we pulled out of the school lot and started heading east. He didn't comment on the soft whisper of the radio playing an embarrassing ton of Lauv - if you don't know who that is, look him up. I only know he's still alive when he turns to me, eyebrows raised, when I park in front of my favorite cafe.

"You took me....to Duncan Donuts?" Did I say cafe? I meant coffee joint.

I sigh, beside myself and turn off the car. "Listen I tend to eat sweet things when I'm stressed or in a bad mood, but I'm not planning on staying. I'm going in to get myself a medium frozen duncachino and a blueberry muffin." He just stare at me like I've lost my mind. Que sigh number two. Impatience is fighting to rip through my calm demeanor.

"Zach? Would you like anything?"

"Uh"

"Okay. So here's what's gonna happen. I'm going to go in and get my food. You have until I walk through that door to tell me if you want anything because if you try to ask for some of my food we will have problems."

There's a long pause as we stare at each other. Too long.

I shrug and get out of the car. Just as I pull open the Dunkin Donuts door I hear the passenger door open and an urgent voice say, "WAIT! Can I have a small mocha latte and a Boston Kreme?" It's actually funny how wide his eyes are.

He sighs in relief when I nod and gets back into the car.

I can't help the chuckle that escapes my lips as I enter every athlete's worst nightmare.

_______

Somehow we end up on at the beach. Well I mean, I know how we ended up here. You know what, never mind.

We used the food as an excuse not to talk. Now, however, we're only a few slurps away from an awkward silence. Great.

I try to make the nonexistent coffee last forever but the universe apparently has other plans. We end up throwing our cups away at the same time on the boardwalk and just stand there.

After a few seconds I decide this is just unacceptable.

"Hey I'm sorry that - " I say this at the same time Zach says, "Hey, uh, thanks for."

We both freeze and then laugh.

"You first," I say.

"Alright. I was gonna say thanks for getting me out of there. I was in not condition to go to practice and I don't think anyone could of handled it better. I mean, ha, I was frozen." He tries to laugh it off but you can tell how embarrassed he is from the slight color spreading around the base of his neck. Cute.
