I wake up the next morning to the smell of bacon and blueberries. A smile finds its way to my face and I take a deep breathe through my nose, savoring it.

I don't put much into getting ready, unlike yesterday, since I can barely focus once freshly brewed coffee is added to the rare aroma coming from the kitchen. I throw on some red converse, toss dancing pants into my bag and head downstairs.

I burst through the kitchen door to find her at the other end, back facing me, packing me my favorite lunch: a turkey and bacon hoagie with baked BBQ chips and homemade strawberry lemonade sans seeds, just the way I like it.

"Mom?" She turns around with the goofy smile I love plastered onto her lips.

"Devyn!" She puts down her coffee and with only a few big steps reaches me, gathering me up in the biggest mom hug. You know, the kind that can lather you up with love and comfort in only one squeeze.

"How's my baby girl? Hmm?" she muses. I squeeze her one last time before letting go.

My mom and I are about the same height so we're at eye level when she searches my face. "I'm . . alright. I guess, you?"

She smiles knowingly and just grabs me for anther hug.

It's hard, not seeing your mother every day. She's a very accomplished surgeon, so accomplished, that the hospital she works at sends her to other hospitals (usually out of state) to train up employees right-out-of-college. She also gets sent to give seminars at colleges themselves. She can be gone up to a month at a time. When she is gone that long, my grandma and aunt would spend the night a couple times a week to make sure I was taken care of, but it was still a little lonely since she was gone in the summer. All I can say is: thank God for Lauren.

"I missed you so much. Oh, and I made you blueberry muffins and a mocha latte for breakfast like always and your favorite lunch."

"Thanks mom, I missed you too," I say and grab a muffin. I check my phone and it's 7:50.

"I only got a few minutes before Lauren gets here. How was your trip?" I ask, mouth full of muffin.

"It was good. One of the patients had IBS and right before I took the team I was working with into surgery one of the girls had a major period cramp and like screamed. It was actually kind of funny in hindsight, but at the time we had no idea what was wrong with her. It honestly sounded like she was about to give birth." She laughs a far away laugh, and I chuckle along with her. She's always coming home with new stories and small adventures she's been on. I know for a fact that some are a little exaggerated because they go against all logic, but it's still fun to listen and pretend like I was there and not across state borders.

My phone dings the special ding I set specifically for Lauren's phone. Without checking it say, "Lauren's here! I got to go but we'll talk later, right?"

I give her a hopeful look and grab my latte. Her smile falters, but stands firm.

"Of course, honey, I love you," she says and hugs me once more.

"I love you too mom," I say and bolt as fast as I can without spilling my coffee.

Just as the door closes I hear her yell, "have a good day at school!" and I know I will, now that she's here.
