Chapter 18: Unlikely Intruder

I blow out a shaky breathe and continue swinging my arms in front of my body so that they cross and then back outwards again in frustration. Swing in front. Cross. Swing backwards. Repeat. You get the picture? Great.

Today's Wednesday, the Wednesday after our field trip to the Broward Dance Showcase - or the showcase before the showcase - which just so happens to also be the Wednesday before the Welcome Back dance this Friday. Practices have been very productive and I am happy to announce that  the group has learned all the choreography and with a couple more hours of practice will have perfected it. Of that I am extremely proud. However, I can't help but feel like something's missing.

I finished my test (yes you heard correctly... a test...and it's only the third week of school) early in my third period and got a pass to come to the studio since I have lunch after this anyway.

At this rate I'm probably better off  just going back to class.

I've been in here for, like, 20 minutes and all I have accomplished is alternating scrolling through my "to be choreographed" playlist on the master computer about 50 times, and flailing my arms. Which is what I'm back to doing right now. Swing in front. Cross. Swing backwards. Repeat.

Swing in front. Cross. Swing backwards. Repeat.

Swing in front. Cross. Swing backwards. Re--

"Okay that's enough!" I yell at my arms. Having to literally force them to stop with my mind.

I stomp over to the computer and pull up YouTube. I look through my "recommended" video thread and click on the first dance video I see. Matt Steffanina, seems promising.

I smile once the video loads seeing as the girl he's dancing with is Kaycee Rice. She's such an inspiration since she's accomplished so much more dance-wise than I have and she's a couple years younger than me.  And then it hits me - A DUET!

I can't even remember the last time I did a dance duet with someone - like a legitimate one...not including the ridiculous choreo Lauren and I come up with when we're bored and out of Chris Williams videos to re-re-re-watch.

I connect the monitor to the projector and play the video so I can try to follow along in front of the mirrors.

I recognize the song as In My Feelings By Drake.

*If you haven't already, I would watch the video to have a visual*

I barely get any of the moves from Kaycee and Matt but as the video progresses I get more and more choreo down from each group. By the fourth I'm full blown free-styling.

"Kiki, do you love me? Are you riding?
Say you'll never ever leave from beside me
'Cause I want ya, and I need ya
And I'm down for you always
KB, do you love me? Are you riding?
Say you'll never ever leave from beside me
'Cause I want ya, and I need ya
And I'm down for you always "

By free-styling I mean jumping around singing the lyrics 'cause they got me in my feelings. Wink. Wink.

When the video ends I'm out of breath but in a much better mood, if the grin on my face was any indication . Now that I know the song, dance type, and part of the choreo, all I need to figure out now is who to do the duet with. Me and Isabella really hit it off Monday. Amalia has the most similar style to mine - after Lauren. And there's always Zach...yeah lets just not continue that thought.

Speaking of Zach...you know that feeling when you're being watched?

Yeah I actually think it's overrated 'cause I never get it. Like ever.
