School is school; freezing classrooms, boring teachers, loud lunch. Yep, the usual. It was all I could do not to trample every slow-walking student - so basically everyone - when the last bell finally rang. Dance practice, atlas!

I make my way to our designated dance studio when my phone vibrates.

WildThang: Hey Devs! Just got outta class but I gtg to the bathroom... see you soon!

DevsTheDiva: K.

That's fine. I'm so eager to get to dance, I didn't realize I'm 20 minutes early. Figures. I'll just get some warm up freestyling in, since I already changed. I stop in front of the door and take a deep breath. Let's do this.

15 minutes later I'm all stretched and ready to dance. What? If you're going to stretch, you have to do it right... or at least thoroughly. Am I right or am I right? Don't bother answering that.

I run to the master computer and scroll through my already set up iTunes playlist. Humble by Kendrick Lamar? Nah. Fake Love by Drake? Next. Oh! How 'bout Mi Gente? Why not.

I hit play and jump in front of the mirrors just as the first beat hits. I pop my hips with every base drop and start working on my foot work. Once I got a solid pattern down, I move on to the arms. I do a tutting technique and start moving my feet smoothly across the mat. I do this until I think I'm properly warmed up and then start to completely freestyle. Perfect timing too, students start to file in and line the walls, plus it's the start of my favorite part of the song:

"He say my body stay wetter than the ocean
I can be a beast or I can give you emotion"

Just as Beyoncé finishes slaying the first line I remember that we did a presentation to this last year. It takes a few seconds for the routine to come back to me but once it does, I finish off the rest of that section of her solo just like last year.

I don't have much time to look around at my audience since I'm half-way freestyling and half-way trying to remember the dance. However, I do spot a few familiar faces that look like they want to join in.

"Hey, if you remember from last year, feel free to join!" I manage to get out in the middle of a high-energy move.

Before I know it, girls from last year jump up and get into position for the next group step. I'm surprised that they remembered it but excited to see how it turns out. We get into position as if we were literally performing and continue the routine.

"Soon as I walk in
Boys start they talkin
Right as that booty sway (Freeze)"

We're having so much fun with it; we freestyle or add in an extra move every now or then since (as expected) we don't remember the whole thing move-by-move. Next thing you know some of the boys jump up and start a freestyle circle around us. A few I recognize, but most are new, as far as I can tell.

"Slay
Lift up your people
From Texas, Puerto Rico
Dem' islands to Mexico (Freeze)"

Now everyone singing the words and dancing where they are. We scream "FREEZE!" together and literally freeze. I haven't had this much fun since last year - during dance practice. I guess dance is my happy place. For the rest of the song we all just have fun with it. I don't object since as soon as it's over, practice is getting real serious real fast. The experienced dancers know this, that's why they don't hesitate to jump right in.

The song finally ends, accompanied by a collective cheer. We burst into applause and as I look at all the smiling but totally wiped out faces around me, I can't help smiling back. I catch a glimpse of Lauren just walking in and freezing in her tracks at the sight of us. And then, like the professional I am, I burst out laughing.
