Now, a week since Zach and I's little therapy session at the beach, I find myself leaning against an old, rusty school bus on the east side of campus.
Lauren's officially done with the dance program, because, and I quote, "if you, the captain of this team, won't be responsible with me here, then you'll just have to learn to do it the hard way...without me" No more easing into it I suppose. I mean I can't really blame her, you know, with me stealing her car and all.
Other than that little lecture, she took what happened before practice pretty well. No yelling and making wild declarations like my dear mother. However, she did threaten to run me over with her car if I ever do that again.
Speaking of my mother...things haven't really gotten any better. You'd think that with all the time we spend apart we would jump at the chance to make up for lost bonding time. Well in all actuality, we're not even on speaking terms. Well, besides her asking me to pass the salt at dinner and listing chores that need to be done since I "oh so conveniently neglected the needs of the house" if she does say so herself. I think the entire situation is ridiculous. She has absolutely no reason to be mad at me. None.
Anyway, back to the here and now. I've been doing quite well without Lauren, in the nicest sense of the phrase. We're still cool...like friendship-wise. It took a little getting used to since I was always so dependent and expectant of her, but I'm getting the hang of it.
Why am I leaning against an old rusty school bus one might ask? Well, today is the dance program's second period field trip to the annual Broward Dance Showcase. Technically the showcase is at 6 pm...but what we're attending is going to be even better.
There's probably about 50 people going on the field trip, students and others. The bus is usually packed and each group likes to sit together so I told everyone to come a little early. Of course, I'm the first one here, you know being captain and all. Irresponsible who?
Just as I think this, Dante and Victoria come into view, walking and laughing together. Victoria spots me first and waves enthusiastic earning a chuckle and a smile in return. This makes Dante look my way and he just smiles before eagerly getting back to their conversation.
The bus departs at 10:50 and we should get to the event by 11:10. The event will probably end around 12:40-ish and at near 1 pm we'll eat lunch and head back here. So really it's a second period, lunch, and part of their period field trip. We're practically missing the whole day. Yay us!
They finish up their conversation just as they reach me, with Victoria laughing hysterically and Dante admiring her.
Oh, ok. I see you Dante.
Don't mind me.
"Oh my God that's ridiculous. But if it ever did work out I'd pay to see it in person" concludes Victoria. She then turns to me. "Hey Devyn! We first?"
"Hey, and looks like it. You guys got your permission slips?" They both go through their bookbags to get the slips and that's when I hear them.
"Are you dumb or are you stupid?"
"I'm neither but your obviously deaf!"
We all look up startled and turn to find Amalia and Grayson heading our way, rather loudly.
"You've got to be kidding me? It obviously is saying Yani! You hear that? Yaaaaaniiiii!"
"Lord have mercy on your soul. I don't think they make hearing aids for people like you. The problem is not just in your ears it's in your brain! Look, here's Devyn! She probably has more sense than you!"
