"Sorry, Billie, I can't make it," Pete said, "I've got a stupid amount of homework. And you know, finals are coming up too."

"Since when did you care about homework?" Billie Joe asked through the phone.

"Since I started getting C's and D's," Pete replied, "I'll go next meeting."

"Alright, it's on Wednsday. Originally Tuesday, but Mike is throwing up like a water faucet," Billie Joe said, "Did you get the secret?"

"Nope."

"Dude! Your deadline is tomorrow!"

"I'll crack it outta him during lunch tomorrow," Pete replied, "Bye."

He hung up the phone and knocked on Mikey's door. He's been standing there for five minutes explaining himself to Billie Joe. Gerard answered the door this time.

"Is your brother home?" Pete asked.

"Yeah, in his room," Gerard replied, "Want me to go get him?"

Pete nodded and waited patiently as Gerard got his brother. Soon Mikey ran down and greeted Pete.

"Hey, Pete," He said, smiling. Aw, Pete loves that smile.

"Sup," Pete replied, "I'm bored. But you always brighten my day somehow, so here I am!"

Mikey laughed softly, letting Pete in.

"Well, what do you wanna do?" Mikey asked.

"I dunno, I honestly didn't think it through," Pete said.

"Ha, well I'm changing the strings on my bass."

"Ooh! Let me help!" Pete grinned.

Mikey lead Pete to his room, where his unstringed bass guitar was. He had one string on so far. Pete sat down on the floor, Mikey sitting across from him. The bass was in the middle. Pete looked at the packets of strings.

"I do top strings, you do bottom, agree?" Pete asked.

"Well, I already got one on," Mikey said.

"Yeah, which means we do two each," Pete said.

"Oh, okay," Mikey agreed, smiling.

Pete mirrored that smile as he pulled out the G string. He began stringing the bass. Mikey worked on the A string. Mikey finished first. Pete kept failing to get the string to stay in the bridge. Soon he got it.

As he worked on the D string, Mikey started a conversation with him.

"How are you feeling?" He asked.

"A whole lot less lonely," Pete said, "That's alot of Ls."

Mikey smiled softly, staring at Pete's hands move.

"But seriously, I feel better."

"I bet, you're talking to your best friend again," Mikey said.

Pete nodded despite the fact that that is not the real reason. Yes, he is more than ecstatic to be talking to Patrick again, but the real reason is Mikey. The entire friendship, he doubted him and Mikey ever being real friends. More of just temperary friends. Friends that would never last. Never did he think that all this would happen. Never did he think he would be genuinely smiling and happy talking to him. He never thought he would be helping string his bass. He never thought any of this would happen. But it did. And he doesn't regret a thing.

Well, he regrets one thing. Not leaving the group when he had a chance.

He tuned the string and stood up, handing Mikey the bass and kneeled down.

"Your bass, sir Mikey."

Mikey laughed, tapping Pete on both shoulders with the neck of his bass.

"I now knight you."

Pete laughed back.

"You're the king of basses," Pete grinned, standing up, "I'm just here to string 'em."

Both shared a laugh.
