Forever Alone?
Nine
Abby’s Point of View
I sat in the hospital waiting room, waiting for the nurses to let me see Shane. His sister Emily, and her I guess boyfriend were back there now.
I remember that day, being upset because Shane stood me up, when truly he was being whisked away in an ambulance. I remember going to school, ready to chew Shane out, when James walked up to me and told me the news. I remember when I first time I visited him. He looked like a machine, with all those cords and wires he was hooked up to.
Shane’s’ basically been in a coma for the past 3 weeks. It’s been some of the loneliest weeks of my life. Tears started brimming in my eyes, and I let my head fall.
“Honey.” Said a short chubby nurse. “You can go see him now.” When I picked my head back up, she wore a sympathetic smile, and held out some tissues. Then she led me to his room.
I pulled a white padded chair up to his bed and just looked at him for a minute. He looked so peaceful, like he was merely taking a nap, but it was actually the complete opposite. He also looked so much younger, like he was only a 12 year old boy, not 17.
“Hey Shane.” I whispered. This is how my visits usually work. I just talk to him, as if nothing is wrong. “I really miss you. Jenna and her boyfriend broke up last week, so I had someone to actually talk to. Well until today when they got back together.” Then I just stopped talking, knowing even if he couldn’t hear me there were other thing to tell him. Things that I needed him to know. I wrapped my arms around myself and stared at him again, as if I would wake him up.
“You know how my dad was at rehab for his alcoholism? Well he’s back now. He actually came back the night off your accident. Everything was nice at our house for a few weeks, like he actually changed this time. But a couple of night ago it all started up again. He came home drunk. The verbal abuse, yelling, and flying vases are back. He almost punched me last night. It’s not like it would have been the first time. But right when he was about to make contact with my face, he just dropped his fist and walked to the kitchen for another beer.” I paused for a second thinking of how Shane would react if he was awake. “My mom refuses to divorce him. She says the same man she fell in love with is still in there. But I know for sure that the same man living in my house, is not the same man I used to call dad, the same man I looked up to.” I felt the tears stream down my face again. How could I be unloading all my crap to my friend who’s in a coma?
“I hope you wake up soon Shane.” I ran my fingers through his soft black hair. “Everyone misses you. Especially me, your sister, James…and Lola.” I let out a little laugh. If Shane could have seen Lola when she heard the news, he would have laughed his butt off.
I interlocked my hand with his, and laid my head on his lumpy hospital bed, and slowly drifted off.
“ Miss, visiting hours are over.” Said Tom the male night that always takes care of Shane. I looked up and saw my hand was still interlocked with Shane’s. “Oh okay well just let me get my stuff.” I replied.
“Bye Shane.” I said leaning over, kissing him on the forehead. “See you soon.”
Well some of you might find this chapter boring, but I really like it! Hope ya’ll enjoy it too. I’m thinking the next chapter is going to be very interesting. If I keep my current idea;) Hope ya’ll are having wonderful days. –Dayna(:
