It feels like I'm in a dream I can smell the Louisiana magnolias behind me, but every thing's so dark now. I run my hands down my legs, and I shiver at the chill that the contact from my fingers with my own skin sends down my spine. I'm cold, very cold, it feels like I'm one of them, but then I look at my friend Hailey and she says "we got this Sam!"
I smile and reply, "hell yeah!"
Two months before:
I am awoken from a dead sleep, at first I'm not sure if I'm dreaming. I'm disoriented, but as soon as my feet hit the floor, I know I am not dreaming. I wake up to sirens and gun shots; I have never heard anything so loud. I run through the house and grab my little sister, Oakley, and the phone. She looks at me her eyes full of terror! I run for the closet carrying her, my heart is beating so fast in my chest, but I try to calm the beats so I don't frighten her any more than she already is. She screams "Teddy I need Teddy!" I turn to grab him and slip hitting my head. I get back up holding her tight, not sure how long I had been out for, and continue to run for the closet, it seems as if I've been running for miles and I'll never get there. Sweat pouring down my face as the sirens get louder I hit the emergency button on my phone, and it immediately dials 911, the dispatcher didn't even give me time to speak two words before saying "all citizens stay inside," then the line went dead! Oakley is crying, I wipe her tears, and tell her mom and dad will be here soon, and I feel bad for lying to her, because the truth was I didn't know if they would have anything left to come back to.. They were on the way back from New York they had finally saved up the money for that trip, a trip that would later become bitter sweet. The uncertainty of what life had in store for us from here on out didn't look good, but I had to be strong for Oakley. I look over at her sitting in the corner telling her teddy bear, Teddy, it would all be okay. I laugh at Oakley her hair a mess, "What ya laughing for bub?"
"No reason, you're beautiful little sis I hope you know I won't let anything bad happen to you, not if there's a breath left in me." She works up a smile, and it did my heart good to see her smile. I can't really explain it in any other way, except that it gave me the courage to try my hardest to fight this battle head on refusing to give up all the way to my last breath. Oh, how I hoped it didn't come to that, not for me nor my precious baby sister.
I open the closet door I stumble to my feet the lights are flickering on and off. I pick up Oakley and walk to the window and see the army in the street. They are shooting at people, there's blood everywhere; there's a massacre unfolding in the streets. Oakley screams I cover her ears in an attempt to shield her from the madness that is unfolding around us and then out of nowhere I shot is fired through our living room window, we slide to the floor!
I try to calm Oakley down, but I'm shaking. I stumble back to my feet and walk to the door. My heart is beating ninety miles an hour and my adrenaline is pumping. I open the door and peak outside, and see a man looking at me with these cold ghostly eyes his mouth covered in blood. The blood drips off of his lip and hits the doorstep I try to slam the door, but he lunges toward us! I try to block the doorway as long as I can without him touching me, all I have for protection is a gig pole, which us Cajun folks use for frogging.
"Run Oakley, run!" I gave her a head start she knew where to hide. I just hoped and prayed for her sake I could catch up. I manage to stall him long enough for her to get out of the house, then I ran for the garage door. He moans. I grab my keys off the key hanger and slam the door, Oakley is already lying down on the back seat of my car out of sight. He scratches the passenger door as I hop in my car and hit the locks. I fumble with the keys knowing I don't have much time; I crank the car, grab Oakley and buckle her in the front seat. No sooner than I throw the car into reverse I noticed she dropped Teddy, but there's no going back, no not this time. I put the car in reverse, and turn the music loud to block out Oakley's screaming. I make it out the driveway and jam it in to drive! People are clawing on my car! I floor it, I know we have to get out of the city! I drive out of the crowd and finally look at Oakley, tears rolling down her checks. I know I can't do this alone! I make a left and go three blocks down, I drive into my friend's wall, because I was afraid they had gotten her and trapped her in her room. I had tried to call her several times on the way to her house, but I could never get an answer, so I panicked and drove to her house. There was no way I could live myself if I had left her here. I roll down the window there's debris and smoke everywhere!
I scream "Hailey get in!" She runs for my car I put Oakley in the back seat. She moves a piece of dry wall off the hood, opens the door, and hops in the car. She looks at me like what the hell is going on! It's like she was looking to me for answers and the weird thing is I was always the one looking to her for answers. I look at her and try to take in how absolutely beautiful she is, this is how I want to remember her. She has long blond hair, and the bluest eyes I've ever seen. She wore makeup, but not much; no matter where she went or what she wore, nine times out of ten she wore her cowboy boots!
I put it in reverse and back out of the house; I grab my gun under my seat and hand it to her. I tell her that we have to get out of the City! We need to get as far as possible away from here, if we stay I know we don't stand a chance at survival!
She says "they're no longer people..." I look at her and stop the car in the middle of the road. "What the heck are you talking about Hailey, care to fill me in, and how you know this..."
"They turned!"
"Who's they?"
"The people they die and forget who they are... all they want is flesh we have to get to a safe place, we are doomed if we stay here."
" Okay let's go." I put it in drive, no further questions asked her eyes had said enough. I put it in drive and head out of New Orleans!
"Where are we going?"
"My family's Plantation! The look on her face is one I haven't seen often, she was caught off guard I guess she hadn't pegged us to have ties to a planation, after all, I didn't quite look the part.
