We walk back into the house, I pick up Oakley and she says "I love you bub."
I can't help but smile, "I love you too, what have you been eating you're getting so big?"
"Hailey...we have to find food and we have to find it soon!" I didn't want to frighten her, but I knew she could sense the fear and urgency in my voice. No sooner than my feet crossed the threshold to walkout of the door, I stop in my tracks, there is a puddle of blood surrounding the lifeless bodies. I cover Oakley's eyes in an attempt to shield her from the bloodily massacre that lies in front of us. I put her in the car, and I turn around to find Hailey just standing there not moving, I guess she was in shock.
"Hailey...Hailey...c'mon we gotta go...we gotta get out of here... it's not safe here..." She didn't budge, I had no choice but to run to her and throw her over my shoulder and carry her to the car. No sooner than we buckled our seatbelts we heard the noise and felt the car shake, we look up to see helicopters flying above us headed for the city. Leaves fly in the wind, trees are shaking.
Hailey looks at me trying to keep and straight face, but it was obvious she was scared, "it must be bad, you think they gonna bomb it!"
I nod yes, with a worried face. "It's time to go get supplies." I put the car in drive and head to the nearest store! We get half way there, and there are hundreds of zombies in front of the car. Their cold lifeless stares send chills through my body. I jam the breaks, Hailey screams "put it in reverse," I stare at their eyes looking for what was once in them. Looking for some sign that there is a little bit of humanity left inside their bodies that have now become nothing more than a cold vessel.
I throw the car in reverse, they lunge toward the car, I turn the car around and floor it hitting a zombie in front of me. The windshield shatters, the body flies over the top of the car, but we keep going. You've got to be crazy if you think I'm stopping.
Hailey reaches for Oakley in the backseat, to try and calm her down. After driving for over an hour, we finally gain ground enough to stop at an abandon house. The house looks brand new with a red mustang in the garage. Hailey says, "who ever lived here must have evacuated before everything went to hell."
"Yall wait in the car while I scout out the surroundings," the trees shiver in the wind, even Mother Nature seems cold here. I look through the window and see blood everywhere. I signal Hailey to come. She leaves Oakley in the car. "Get your gun and be prepared...shoot at anyone who looks like one of them." She nods yes with a serious face. I turn the doorknob, my hand shaking and see a young couple in a puddle of blood on their living room floor, with bullet holes in their head!
Hailey says," in what right world should this have to happen," her hand is over her nose trying to drown out the smell. We decide they must have ended it before it got bad. We make our way to the kitchen and dig through the cabinets. There's a ton of canned food and a bag of beef jerky. We grab everything and walk back through the living room trying to not disturb their bodies. I spot a pair of car keys next to the door my fingers clasp the cold keys. Then we hear a Big Bang, my ears are ringing, I look at Hailey as if she's got the answers. She says, "the bombs, it's the bombs."
I do the only thing I know how to do right now and that is run, "We've got to get out of here," Hailey follows my lead with Oakley in tow we make a b-line for the door. I close the door to the house behind us, blindly ignoring our surroundings.
I look at Hailey with a grin, "look what I got." She smiles and says "you got the keys to the mustang Sam."
"Sure did, it's time to ditch this ride we were about to run out of gas anyways, besides this is a more dependable car."
"Yeah you got that right, and a hell of a lot faster too!" We load the food in the mustang, and put Oakley in the back seat. I grab a can of gas and put it in the trunk. Hailey climbs in the car I close the trunk, and jump in the driver's seat. I turn the key and the engine roars to life! I turn around and look Oakley dead in the eyes, "It's gonna be okay little sis, we will be okay!" I back up out of the garage, put it in drive, and we get back on the highway. I look back and see the city being consumed in flames! Hailey smiles in relief knowing that that part of this life we now live is behind us!
