Chapter 9: The Griever

I wake up with a start. "Ahh! Shuck! You popped up like a shucking griever or something!" I see Minho sitting up on the floor, an angry expression on his face. "Whats a griever?" I ask. "Uh, nothing, just blurted out some gibberish or something," Minho says, not looking at me. He is totally lying. You were talking in your sleep, so I came to make sure you were okay," Minho says, looking at me. "Uh, I had another flashback Minho," I say. He looks really surprised and runs out the door. "Wait! What's the big deal!?" I yell after Minho, but he doesn't seem to hear me.

I put my sound-phones on, and press play. The music seems foreign at first, but after a while, small memories come back to me slowly. My mother's name, Alexis. My father's name, Justin. My age, which is fifteen. It's like the music is helping my brain put together a puzzle of mushy memories. The song has a really good beat and tune, and I tap my foot to the rhythm.

"The death of a bachelor
Oh oh oh
Letting the water fall
The death of a bachelor
Oh oh oh
Seems so fitting for
Happily ever after (woo)
How could I ask for more?
A lifetime of laughter
At the expense of the death of a bachelor"

Newt, Alby, and Minho run in, so I take my sound-phones off. "You had another flashback?" Newt asks me. I nod, saying, "Why is this a big deal? Don't you guys get your memories back?" Newt shares a glance with Alby and Minho. Newt finally breaks the awkward silence, and says, "It usually only happens when you get stung." Stung. That doesn't sound good. "What does that mean? Is there like, evil memory bees or something?" I ask, wondering aloud. Alby looks at Newt and Minho, then speaks, "No. They're called Grievers. Newt'll show you."

Newt runs out of Homestead, making me sprint to catch up with him. We run into the deadheads, to the wall. Newt swipes back a curtain of vines to reveal a hidden window. Looking in, I see a maze. Are we in the middle of a giant maze? Who put us here?  I look up and see the setting sun, and I hear the grinding of the closing maze doors. Suddenly, red lights bounce off the walls of the maze, and a haunting moaning sound echoes through the air. I see a metal leg rounds the corner. And another, this one sporting a pair of shears. And another. And another. Until the whole creature emerges. The thing is pure nightmare fuel. It has a grotesque, slimy body, which has metal appendages jutting out of it in every direction. Lots of the arms have razors and saws on them. The last appendage looks like a scorpion tail, and it has three grabbers on it. Popping out and in of the stinger is a syringe full of weird liquid. "Oh look. It's a shucking memory bee," I whisper, using the stupid name I've given it. Newt smiles and says, "you look so tense. It can't get us over here." Suddenly, the Griever jumps at us, slamming its body against the window. I scream, running as fast as I can away from the window. I run and run, out of the deadheads. I hear Newt yelling for me to stop, that it's okay. I don't listen. I hear running behind me. I look back and see Minho and Thomas running after me. I pick up my pace and run straight. I realize that I've run into the building area. I hear Minho and Alby yelling at someone to stop me. Suddenly, I feel two strong arms wrap around me, keeping me from running any more. "Shh, it's okay, stop running. You're fine." I look up and see Gally. Gally was the one comforting me, not Newt, not Thomas. Gally. He lets go of me. And I start silently crying.
