Ben's point of view
Chapter Five
Was it too soon?
I didn't want to waste my time on another useless girl. All of the others bailed at the last second. I'm growing up. I'm getting older. I didn't need another person to bring me down. I need someone who will stay with me. For a long time. I'm twenty-five years old. But I know deep down that it's time for me to grow up.
Would Charlie be the girl for me?
I was taking Charlie to my favorite diner. I wanted to show her who I was. She had to see the real Ben in order to love the real Ben. But even if we came to be just friends, Charlie had to see what I was like.

I pulled into Charlie's driveway at eight. I could see her dad watching me from their living room window. Her friend, the blonde, was pushing her out of the doorway. She was wearing dark blue jeans and a grey sweater. Her curled hair bounced on her shoulders as she ran up to meet me by the passenger side door. Her grey eyes were luminous tonight. It was difficult to stop looking into them.
"Ready to go?" I asked, helping her into the Jeep.
"Sure." She smirked.
I closed the door and rushed to the other side. The key was already in the ignition, so I turned it with a hard flick. The engine revved, and Charlie's face lit up.
"Where are we going?" Her eyes held a certain amount of curiousity.
"Somewhere special."
"Special?" She smiled, holding in a laugh.
"What? A guy can't have a special place?"
She shrugged. "I don't know."
I pulled out of the driveway. Her dad's face left the blinds and her friend shut their front door.
I looked away from the road for a second. "Do you like breakfast for dinner?"
"I love breakfast for dinner," she piped.
"Good." I smiled.
Charlie was a beautiful girl. I don't remember a time when I've seen someone more enchanting than her. She caught my attention, and she caught it well. Everything about her intrigued me.

When we entered the diner, the entire place was deserted. Charlie and I chose the booth that was well hidden from all the others. A waitress named Joy handed us our menus, her bright red hair oulled up into a messy bun. She had creamy skin and soft freckles on her cheek bones. Her lips were slathered with magenta-colored lip stick.
"Take your time," she chimed smoothly.
Charlie flipped the front cover of her menu over, enjoying the simplicity of the possibilities to choose from.
"Do you have anything to recommend?" she asked, staring up at me with her shining grey eyes.
"I always get the pancakes," I answered.
"Are you getting that now?"
"I might be," I laughed. "Why?"
She beamed, "I'll have the same."
