My alarm clock buzzes me awake at 4:30am. Horses. I have to feed the horses. Dancer. Clara left Dancer here. My brain slowly processes the things I need to do before school.
I groan as I pull on my boots and shuffle out to the barn. When I get there, I flip the switch and all the lights come on. Dancer nickers softly in her stall but I don't see her. I walk over to the stall and almost pass out on sight. Her stomach is bloated and she won't stand. Oh god. I run to the tack room and grab a lead rope before sprinting back to her side.
"C'mon! Stand up girl! C'mon! You can do it! Stand!" I frantically yell, while pulling on her lead.
When she doesn't stand, I drop the lead and call Clara. The phone rings.
"C'mon. Pick up, pick up, pick up!" I groan in frustration.
Finally she picks up.
"Hello?" a groggy voice answers.
"Clara! Thank god you answered!"
Clara's POV.
"Clara...god....answered!" the phone breaks up.
"What's going on?" I say tiredly glancing at the clock.
"Emergency.... Dancer.... Bad.... Colic!" she yells.
"What? I can't understand you. Your breaking up."
"Come.... Barn... Dancer.... Colic!!!" she practically screams.
"I can't understand you. I'm on my way!" I say back, and the line goes dead.
Seconds later a text pops up that nearly kills me.
*Get here ASAP. Dancer has a bad case of colic and won't get up. I don't think she's gonna make it.*
My blood runs cold and I turn white as a ghost. Dancer. My horse. Gotta leave.
"Tyler! Ty!" I yell.
"What! what is it?!" He says, panic thick in his voice.
"Dancer! She has Colic and Marie tried to get her up but she wouldn't and then the call broke up and Dancer! Oh my god!" I sob.
"Shh. Clara. Its gonna be okay. Ill get the kids and we will all go. Relax." he soothes.
I nod but sob uncontrollably. Dancer is the last thing I have of my father. She is my life. And now... she's dying.
Marie's POV
I try to stand her up countless times. Each time, she gives a pained neigh and lays her head back down. My sister will be heartbroken if this horse dies. I can't let her die. I just can't.
"Dancer please!!" I yell. "Stand up!"
She lifts her head and looks at me. Then, she stands. I let out a sound that is between a sigh and a laugh. It sounds like I choked. I lead her as quick as I can to the indoor arena and begin to walk her around.
About fifteen minutes in, I hear someone sprinting and then my sister yells.
"Marie!"
"In here!" I yell back.
I look at Dancer's stomach. The bloating has gone down some.
"Oh my god! I thought... Oh my god! My baby!" she runs over to us and hugs me as tight as she can. Then she turns to Dancer and hugs her neck.
Dancer hugs her back for a second before her legs begin to shake. I try to pull her forward, but just as Clara steps away, she falls to her side again. I called the vet right after I called my sister but she still hasn't shown up.
Where the hell is she?! my conscious yells.
"Did you call the vet?" Clara says through the tears welling in her eyes.
"Yeah. Right after I called you." I answer, my own tears threatening to spill.
Another horse in pain cries out and my heart almost stops. Caramel.
