I don't know what's more painful, my mother making me an addict without my knowledge and keeping secrets from me or knowing I'm addictive to sedatives I've been abusing for years? It's crazy, to think the one woman who is meant to be your mother, take care of you and make sure you are safe is the same woman who's been feeding me sedatives that could destroy my life in the future. I can't believe she did this and the fact she didn't deny it is what makes it all the more unbelievably painful.
Thinking back on all those times she said not to drink, she knew drinking while on my medication would make my condition worse. She knew giving me any other medication will make this worse. How did I not see that? There was no way I'd be able to see it, I trusted her with my mediation, I trusted the doctor to be able to help with my anxiety disorder but instead, they hook me up with Anxiolytics. Addicted me, made me feel sick, and despite all the side effects, it made me feel I couldn't stop taking them believing it's the only thing that can help me function every day.
I grunt under my breath in annoyance, limping to the bathroom door. It has gotten gradually better but my muscles aren't strong enough to handle all of the weight so I have to walk around like I was born with a leg deformity or something. I really hope when Alexei checks my leg in two weeks I don't lose my track running scholarship from muscle damage.
When I open the door to the bathroom, Neil is leaning against the wall with his phone in his hand. Giving the blonde, lofty male an unamused look at his unnecessary presence, "Really? Are we going to keep doing this when I'm in the bathroom?" I lean against the door frame, my words going in one ear and out of the other which irritates me when he's on his phone for a few more moments before he settles his attention on me. "You're done? Alexei is downstairs, he wants to check on you one more time." Neil says.
I blink quizzically, "One more time?"
He nods his head, "You seem to be doing a lot better, so we're leaving Detroit this evening." He answers, surprising me in the process. I nod in understanding limping out of the bathroom and closing the door behind me, Neil takes it upon himself to carry me in his arms—like a habit. I'm already used to doing this and more than half the time I find myself enthralled by him; short blonde mane falling over his thick eyebrows, honey hazel eyes sharp and soft, jaw defined, flesh pink full lips, and his sandy skin emitting a pleasant, smooth fragrance tempting me to bury my nose in the crook of his neck.
I'm pretty sure he wouldn't appreciate it.
Reaching the bottom of the steel staircase, he lets me down and I limp my way to Alexei standing in front of the dining table. The tall doctor turns to face me with a smile on his thin lips, bold olive green eyes intense and soft, "Matty, how are you?"
I return the smile as I find it to be contagious, "A lot better than the other day." I answer, Alexei pulling out one of the plastic green chairs for me to sit on and I thank him, "And your leg?" He asks facing the table where a large black duffle bag is placed.
I flicker my eyes down to the patch on my thigh to remind me to not wet it, "It hurts a lot less but I can't put any weight on it without me falling on the floor." I cock an eyebrow when he lifts his arms to reveal crutches, having to put them together until it's in my appropriate height. Not this again, I think mortified. "For now, you will use this to help you walk. Neil will be taking you to a safe house and from there he will personally be giving you physical therapy to regain strength in your leg. I'll be coming to see you every two weeks." He places one on the table then continues to repeat it with the second.
It takes me a moment to realize what he had said. Physical therapy with Neil? He'd much rather have me crawl around the floor than ever have to deal with me walking around and getting on his nerves. "What's with that face?" Neil inquires making me peer over to him with a blank expression, "What face?" I drawl.
