Chapter 8
I drop Noah off at his house and I get to meet his little sister. Her name is Roxanne and she is an absolute angel.
She has raven-black her that falls elegantly on her back for an eleven year old. It's silkier than mine. I know because I couldn't resist the urge to touch it. She has olive green eyes and she has the cutest smile that is paired with one dimple on her right cheek.
I also got to meet Noah's parents, Mr and Mrs Anderson, who would rather be called Daniel and Rosetta. His mom remarried and Daniel is actually his step-dad. His last name is Miller, but Noah still stuck with his mom's maiden name. They were so nice and said that I was welcome in their home any time. They even invited my family over for dinner next week Sunday.
On the drive home, I think of my date with Ethan. He didn't say when he'd take me out. I'll have to text him tonight. And as if he was reading my mind, I get a text from him.
Jerkface: I'll pick you up at 19:00, Saturday night. :-)
I laugh when I realise what I changed his contact to. I had been so angry that night. I'm surprised I didn't block him.
Me: Okay. See you then.
I unlock the front door and I announce to no one specifically that I'm home.
Before I can lock myself in my room and attempt to read 5 chapters of To Kill A Mockingbird, mom calls me into her room, which is a surprise because she's usually busy at work, being a Cardiothoracic surgeon. I guess this was one of her free days.
“Hey sweetie, how was your day at school?” She asks in a sweet tone. She looked tired and purple half moons under her eyes. Her hair was disheveled and a few grey hairs were beginning to show. I completely forgot that I had to tell her what happened Saturday night. I felt so guilty for leaving my mom in the dark.
“I got chocolates and roses from a mystery guy. Who I later found out was Ethan.” I say with a frown on my face
“Why do you look upset about this? Don't you like Ethan? I thought you had fun on Saturday night.”
“About Saturday night,” I start telling her about the "catastrophic" events.
When I'm done explaining everything in detail, she immediately embraces me in a warm hug.
“My poor baby. Why didn't you tell me this earlier? You know I don't like it when you keep things from me. I'm so sorry that this had to happen.” She says in a comforting tone.
“I talked to him after school. He said he wanted to take me out to Café Belle on Saturday.” I tell her as I let her stroke my hair, still in her arms.
“What do you want?”
“I want to believe him so badly, so I'm giving him a chance to prove himself. I said I would go with him.”
“If that's what you want, I fully support your decision. Just don't get hurt and don't submit yourself to things you don't want to do.” She looks at me. Her eyes full of concern and love.
“I won't mommy, I promise.” I say and she holds out her pinky finger, indicating that I lock mine with hers. I do so and she tightens her finger, as if binding the promise.
I walk out of her room, feeling like a weight has been lifted off my shoulders.
Ten minutes into this book and I'm sick of it. It should be renamed to To Kill High School Learners, because that's what it's doing to me.
I throw the book on my bed in exasperation and lie on my bed. I'm so tired and it's still Monday.
My phone rings next to me and I answer without seeing who it is.
