"Got you, didn't I?"
"As if," I scoffed, rolling my eyes as Yugyeom chuckled.
"As if," he repeated, "I don't call 17 continuous messages an 'as if'."
"You can't blame me for being surprised," I said, "You're the one trying to be a matchmaker, and then all the sudden you say that you want her?"
The eyes of Jaehyung and Mingyu landed on me and Yugyeom, widening at my sentence.
"Brownie wants Jia? Since when?" Jaehyun said, rubbing his hands together and arching his eyebrows in interest.
"Since yesterday, but I just said it to see if Jungkook would get bitter, which he did," he explained, and sent a toothy grin in my direction, and I looked the opposite way.
"I did not get bitter," I stated, trying to seem like I wasn't shriveling up in embarrassment.
"Kookie, you don't have to be so defensive about possibly liking someone," Mingyu said, "How long have you been talking to her?"
"Six days," I said, "You can't like someone in six days."
"Of course you can. People in this school fall in love in half that time. Romeo and Juliet got married in one day," Yugyeom said, holding up one finger just to prove his point.
"Anything is possible these days," he finished, and I shook my head.
"But all of those relationships are superficial. They don't last long," I said, taking a sip of my milk. Yugyeom's eyebrow started rising, almost reaching his hairline until I arched mine at his.
"What?"
"So what you're saying is," Yugyeom said, scooting over until his shoulder was touching mine, "you want to have a true relationship? With Jia?"
For a second I sat there in bewilderment until I realized that I picked my words the wrong way, at the wrong time.
Like a flash of lightning, crimson lit up my cheeks and a storm of stumbling words started to escape my mouth like rain from the clouds.
"That's not, that's not w-what I meant!"
"So what did you mean?"
"I, uh, I," I stuttered, scrambling to fix my phrase, but was cut short by a strident voice entering the space of our table, being diluted by foreign politeness.
That voice was too familiar to me.
"Excuse me, but may I talk to Jungkook for a second?"
Bitna was standing there, her palms pressed against the table and a coy smile was placed on her face.
Although her face was in the typical expression, her eyes were sending weapons of war to a certain person in our table, and he was firing right back.
I rolled my own and got up from the table, to stop the silent battle between the two of them.
"What do you want to talk about?" I asked, crossing my arms over my chest. Her gaze shifted from Yugyeom to me and a fresh smile appeared on her face.
"It's about the project. You want to get a good grade, right?" she said, and I nodded.
"Then come to my table for a quick second so we can talk about it," she said, already starting to walk towards her table, leaving me behind. I grudgingly followed her, giving the others a bemused look before turning back so I wouldn't lose sight of her.
After winding around the tables, we eventually made it to hers, where her friends were waiting expectantly as if I were a present.
Bitna turned around and waved her hand, gesturing for me to sit down.
I felt my ears reddening as I sat, trying to avoid the stares of the other girls surrounding me.
"So, we decided on cherry blossoms, correct?"
I nodded quickly, already itching to leave.
"Since the teacher said we could take them out of class to work on them, do you want to meet up at my house on Saturday to work on it?"
I could barely hear the sound of her friend beside us giggling over my own heartbeat. I instantly looked down at my lap, fiddling with my fingers until she prompted me.
"Well?"
"N-no?"
Her facial features morphed into straight lines as her friends broke into a louder laughter than before. My eyes buzzed away from her darkening eyes, not sure what would happen if I were to look into them.
"Why not?"
"B-because," I started, racking my brain for any excuse that I could use.
I just knew I couldn't be with her alone.
"It's easier to g-go to the library?"
An uncontrolled fit of laughter suddenly burst through the awkward tension like water through a dam. High-pitched squeaks and breathless cackles were all that could be heard at the table, making a few that were close turn their heads.
A particular unruly laugh came from Hyejin, and she was wiping her tears away as she looked at Bitna.
"Bitna, just s-stop," she stuttered out, trying to regain her voice, "Give up."
Bitna's eyes widened, and for the first time in a long time, her face darkened.
Soon enough, she was nearly screaming at her friends who were still attempting to compose themselves over my response. I flinched from her shouts and inched away from them until I able to get up from the table unnoticed.
And then I ran.
A/N: this chapter is long.
let me stop right there.
+ just imagine jeongguk running away from a lunch table while a girl is screaming.
++ have a wonderful day/night
