Chapter 16
I storm the short distance to Arron's house with one thing set in my mind. The truth. I can't help but worry if the only reason Arron even started talking to me was because I look like Selena. A part of me thinks it's some big coincidence. But of course there's the other side that always finds a way to come up with a reason of how that's wrong.
I pound on the door. I feel like a cop yelling at the pep, about to kick the door open. The door opens and I all of a sudden feel bad for acting rude. "Sorry Marie, is Arron home?"
Marie smiles,"Miss him already dear?" She chuckles,"You just missed him. He went to the hospital to see Kobe."
"Do you know when he'll be back?"
She shakes her head,"I don't. Just call him hon. I'm sure he won't let it ring long." She smiles. Hadley's cry can be heard from in the kitchen and Marie frowns,"Sorry, would you like to come in?"
I shake my head, stepping back,"No. I should get going. See you later." I say, mustering up a smile.
She smiles, slowly closing the door,"Bye dear."
Grunting, I trudge back home and march upstairs to get my phone. Travis is currently cleaning up from dinner. "Are you okay?" He asks, scrubbing down a plate.
"I'm fine can I borrow the car?"
Travis stops scrubbing and folds his arms across his chest,"For?"
I sigh, tiredly rubbing my eyes,"I need to go see Kobe at the hospital."
"Arron can't take you? Wouldn't he like to-"
"He's already there....he..he told me to meet him there."
Travis looks me over then shrugs, walking over to a tray on the microwave. "Don't crash."
I snort,"Thanks for the words of advice."
Travis nods,"Be good."
I nod, running outside to the car. I absentmindedly wave to Travis from the window and drive around the loop and onto the road.
I impatiently tap on the steering wheel, my nerves flaring the closer I get to the hospital. Both from doubt that the very reason Arron likes me and if it is the reason from anger. Lots of anger.
I hurriedly pull into the emergency lot and rush to the entrance, avoiding a pushed stretcher.
I recognise Fran and give her a curt nod. She smiles sweetly back. I feel bad that she had to catch me in a bad mood.
I don't worry about knocking and push his door open. Ciera, Bryan, Arron and of course Kobe snap their heads to me. Arron smiles, getting up.
"I didn't know you were coming. Didn't tire you out?" He winks.
I stay silent, crossing my arms across my chest. Arron's smile drops and he gently touches my arm. "Are you okay?"
I breathe through my teeth,"I need to talk to you. Out there." I say simply, nodding towards the hall.
Arron's brows furrow. He searches my face for any sign that I'm joking. When he doesn't get any he looks back to the others,"I'll be right back."
He follows me out the door, making sure to close it behind him. They're not gonna wanna see this.
"What's going on sweetheart?"
"You've never really told me about Selena. You know, what she looks like."
Arron runs a hand through his tousled hair, looking down at his feet before meeting my eyes again. His blue ones tired.
"Why is this so important to you? You know I don't like talking about her." He whispers.
His deteriorating mood makes me want to pull back a little but I press on. I need to know. I need to know if this whole falling in love thing wasn't all in my head.
"What was her hair like?"
"Why do you want to know?" He says, his voice raising.
"Curly? Blond?"
His faces turns into a scowl,"What does that mean?"
"Did she have brown eyes? Light skin?" I say, my once powerful exterior crumbling.
Arron keeps his hard gaze on me, shaking his head,"I'm not understanding where you're getting at."
I scoff, throwing my hands in the air,"Isn't it obvious? How can you be so dumb?" I hit him in the chest a few times. He grabs my fist,"Why are you so mad?" He yells.
"She looks just like me Arron! Just like me!"
Arron holds onto my hand but I jerk from him. He sighs, rubbing his eyes. "Where are you getting at?"
I look at him in awe. He really doesn't get the big picture. Or if he does he's playing dumb which is really making me mad.
"Is that the only reason..?"
Arron's face falls. He looks hurt. "The only reason I like you?"
"Yes." I breathe, irritatingly wiping a tear.
"No. There are so many reasons why I love you. You and her are so different. But.."
Oh no. There's a but.
"I took interest of you. Because..you did remind me of her."
My insides shatter. My heart breaks in half. My nerves unleash. My tears spill.
"So if I was a brunette you wouldn't have given me a second glance?"
Arron shakes his head, trying to grab me,"It's not like that. We were brought together for a reason. Two people don't just come together like we did."
I shake my head, backing from him. "That is so wrong and you know it. It's like she's back from the dead. You're dating your beloved Selena through me."
Arron's eyes glaze over and he shakes his head,"I promise you sweetheart it's not like that. I love you. Not her. Sure your similarity caught my attention but you're not her!" He exclaims.
"No. I can't do this." I turn from him and he grabs my arm.
"Please. Don't do this." He begs. His eyes are red, small tears I have never seen spill from them.
"To late." I blubber. "You already did."
I forcefully pull from his hold and ignore his calls as I round a corner. All the while I'm trying to make it back to the car I'm crying like a baby. Attendants and nurses give me wary looks. Some even stop to ask me if I'm okay. I push past them all and sprint to the exit. I slam the car door shut and in pure frustration I pound on the steering wheel. Tears stain my face.
All the reasons I couldn't wait to wake the next day. Reasons that made this summer so special. Made me glad my mom sent me are gone. They're not real. I wasn't real to him so why should they be.
I shakily start the car and start down the main road back home. My phones going off. Arron. I know it.
It starts ringing. Then stops. Ringing then stops. I stop at a red light and decide to turn the stinken thing off. All the while I'm trying to keep my hard breathing down I'm fumbling in my bag for my phone.
Ringing. Then stops. A new sound alerts me. A horn maybe. Then a crash of metal on metal. My distraction of forgetting my seatbelt sends me into the windshield. The once sad world goes dark.
Ringing. Then stops.
