"Mommy!" Copeland shouted, quickly hopping out of our car and eagerly rushing over to her mother. The two hugged and Copeland giggled like a maniac as she was lifted off the ground and held in her mother's arms. I followed directly behind the child, holding out her small backpack and smiling at Katelynne who stepped down the miniature set of stairs connecting the sidewalk and higher level of asphalt.
"How was mass?" I questioned. She returned the smile and adjusted her hold on Copeland.
"About the same as usual." She paused to look around at the people passing by, a confused expression resonating on her face. "Kellin didn't come?" I shook my head in reply as people continued to brush past us while we were standing in place.
With that, we climbed into my car, Copeland buckled up into a new booster seat in the back, then taking off back to my house. We arrived within a few minutes, slipping inside quietly with Copeland running upstairs to undoubtedly go find some toys. I ventured behind her, approaching the bed and giving Kellin a small tap on the arm to wake him up. "Merry Christmas," I whispered as his eyes creaked open a bit. He smiled and pushed the blankets off himself, sitting up and inviting me to sit next to him. I obliged as he grabbed my hand and began twiddling with my fingers.
"I missed mass?" he asked hoarsely, clearly holding back a cough from escaping his scratchy throat. I nod and give his back a small rub to assure that it's not an issue. "God, I feel like shit." He reaches beside himself and finds the cold medicine sitting on the nightstand, dry swallowing a couple pills and sighing afterward. I inform him that Katelynne is over and he decides to get up and put some sweatpants on, trudging downstairs to greet her. I collect Copeland from her pile of children's toys and carry her back down with me to see the two of them.
"Well, I guess that's my cue to be taking off?" Katelynne asked after a moment, looking between Kellin and their child. "I'll come by tomorrow morning, yeah? Maybe we could all eat lunch together or something," she said hopefully. I returned her smile and nodded, then handing Copeland over to say her goodbyes. Once Katelynne departed. Kellin and I are were already hitting the bed and attempting to fall asleep within seconds. Mike hadn't made a peep, and Copeland was likely trying to catch some shut-eye herself.
The morning felt like it came in an instant with Copeland hopping above Kellin and I on the bed shouting about how it was time to open presents. Laughing, I managed to get Kellin down the stairs in one piece, then collecting Mike and sitting everyone around the Christmas tree adorning the living room. I distributed presents, and it reminded me of the first Christmas Copeland and Kellin has spent with us, which left me smiling to myself just remembering those good old days. Not that the current days were at all bad, if anything they were better. About halfway through the stack of presents, a knock rang on the door and Mike let Katelynne in.
She added to the pile and sat down beside her daughter, helping the child open one of the packages she had brought in by removing the decorative red ribbon.
It was much different than years prior, and I can't say I didn't enjoy it. Sometimes it felt strange having Katelynne around, but we were all fully aware that she was no longer romantically involved with Kellin and was simply spending time with her daughter, and the two of us as friends. Mike was only sometimes around, usually off working at his job or locked up in his room with Tony, but he never made it any more awkward. Everything was simply pleasant, and it felt as though peace had finally been achieved in this damn household. No more nasty habits and broken relationships, those were all just mistakes in the past.
In fact, it wasn't long before Katelynne introduced us to her new boyfriend, and a few years later they were married. Kellin and I were both there with Copeland to celebrate the newfound love between her mother and someone different. Jaime was completely out of my life now, and at no point did I ever dwell on what was. Instead, I was one-hundred percent focused on Kellin and I since we had repaired our relationship. The custody between Katelynne and Kellin still worked out perfectly fine, and all was well.
We could all live happily ever after. At least until something else dramatic decides to happen to us...but we'll be ready for it.
END.
