Luke

In the first hour of their quest Dalus made thirty six jokes, Poppy make thirty seven punches (one was to Luke for suggesting that Dalus could be a comedian) and Raven managed not to utter a single word. It certainly was an interesting experience, Luke mused, going on an adventure with your twin brother, your ex-girlfriend, a violent girl and a temperamental boy.

At the present Luke was walking at the back of the group with Theo. They were in the heart of Manhattan and searching for a possible ride across the country. As Dalus had deduced, the prophecy had something to do with the pit, aka Tartarus, and as they all knew his army was inhabiting Camp Jupiter at the present. Everyone had been rather surprised. Dalus’ intellect came out at the most random times.

Theo could actually be rather funny. he just kept to himself most of the time. Luke was trying to listen but he couldn’t help but notice that Raven had started chatting away as soon as he was out of the vicinity. It made his chest pang a little.

They stopped for a break under a large shelter. It had mosaic floors and was nice and airy but sheltered from the elements. He took a swig of water from his drink bottle, blue like the rest of the gear Sophie had given him. A group of musicians was strumming along to a catchy tune. Luke felt himself tapping his foot to the beat as the others went off for a toilet break. He started nodding his head too, and mimicking playing the drums like he used to when he was little. Then he heard a small recognisable giggle to his left. Whipping his head around he saw Raven squatting down, doubled over her pink backpack with laughter.

Luke smiled. She looked like she was when they were dating - happy and relaxed. Her plait swung over her shoulder, her dark eyes were crinkled and she had a huge smile gracing her features.

He instinctively leaned over and started tickling her side. She gasped and started fighting him off half heartedly, grin now covering her whole face.

Then she leaned in slightly and he froze. Was she? Should he? What? No? His thoughts melted into goo.

Her eyes closed and she touched her lips to his. Instantly he kissed back, giving in to her. He didn’t know what to do with his hands but just let them hang swinging.

There was a moment of pure bliss before he got hit in the back of the head. Hard.

“Ow” he complained, pulling away. An irritated blonde chick strode into view.

“That’s for being a douche” she proclaimed. Theo and Dalus were on the brim of laughter. Raven was beet red.

Luke coughed, standing up. “I guess I deserved that.” He offered a hand to Raven and she took it, swinging upwards. She smiled awkwardly at him, and Dalus fake ‘awed’.

“I know you two are too adorable but can we please speed things up a little?” Dalus asked. Everyone nodded in agreement, slinging their backpacks over their backs.

They kept wandering through the park, taking their time. Luke and Raven strayed behind, holding hands and just talking. It was nice, Luke admitted, to not be stressed anymore.

Theo and Poppy were talking at the front. At one point Poppy gasped and flung her arms around the brown headed boy, kissing his cheek as well. Theo slowly turned red. Luke swore he saw Dalus’ forehead crease into a scowl.

Poppy turned and faced the group. “Theo thought of an idea to get us in the air” she beamed at him. “We could call back to camp and get them to send pegasus’! Why no one thought of this before I don’t know but we need to do it now!” She was bursting with excitement, which made Luke chuckle.

“How are we going to get these pegasus’?” Dalus queried, staring down Theo. He looked a little, well, jealous. Dalus usually came up with the ideas.

Theo shrugged. “I spent a little time with them over the last few months and hopefully know how to call them.” He turned his face skywards, held two finger to his lips, and whistled.

Thirty seconds later three black spots appeared in the sky. They descended rather quickly, all alighting beside Theo. One black, one chestnut and one grey. They nickered softly upon landing, eyes flicking intelligently between all the kids.

Dalu screwed up his face. “I can understand what the horses are saying” he muttered softly. Luke stared at his twin in shock. He had heard stories of his father, Percy, having that gift, but never thought one of the kids would have it.

The other three also looked stunned as Dalus started speaking quietly in one pegasus’ ear. He pulled back sharply suddenly, and turned to the group.

“This is Cloud, Oakley and Jet” he announced, pointing to each horse in turn. “Cloud says she wants the dark haired one, because she doesn’t look scared. Jet wants Theo. And uh, Oakley wants me.” Luke and Poppy shifted uncomfortably as the others claimed their horses.

Raven beckoned Luke over, and he relaxed instantly, hurrying to her side. Poppy was biting her lip, looking a bit frightened which was unusual. Dalus, being surprisingly gentle, took her hand and led her over to get familiar with Oakley.

Once everyone was mounted, Theo cleared his throat.

“So, uh, let’s go!” And they flew off into the heavens.
