She'll arrive a girl, she must leave a woman
And what makes the difference between a girl and a woman?
Blood.
Moving to Wessex was a pure tragedy.
Queen Judith requested and they had the obligation to obey.
It was so unfair to leave the place where she was born; the place she had loved so much in her 19 years; her friends, her relatives, her whole life; left behind as if it meant nothing. And all because of the bearded demons from the North.
She heard her father, Alder, tell stories about them countless times: wild and ruthless men who crave for blood and destruction, even though, she never met any.
''Darling, wake up! Darling ... Evellíne!'' the mother's tender voice had awakened her from a nearly ten-hour nap.
The poor girl was exhausted: four days of an exhaustive trip to Wessex, weather so cold and rainy that it only made the situation worse, reminding her of the warmth of her homeland.
''Oh, come on ...Please, straighten your dress, it's all wrinkled. What would Queen Judith say if she saw how messy you look?''
Evellìne rolled her eyes and followed her mother's advice.
''My dress may be a mess and not so elegant to the Queen's taste ... But I have to say, mother, that my expectations for Wessex were too big... I'm kinda disappointed.'' she smiled, almost mocking.
The place was filthy, lacking soldiers, and with no sign of prosperity.
''Blame the damned Northmen'' her father said ''the bastards not only killed King Ecbert, but they also destroyed the whole Kingdom. To rebuild everything... Oh Lord, it will take years.''
The imminence of a new attack was the reason the Queen had summoned all the available allies.
Her father accepted in a blink of an eye because his friendship with Ecbert represented a lot for him, both had known each other since when they were children, and when he took the throne, Alder swore loyalty to him 'till death. Even though they followed distinct paths, the friendship remained intact over the years.
