Darkness.
Two weeks had passed. Weeks longer than years and years.
It is intriguing how pain and time are old strangers and at the same time brothers. They walk together forever.
Evelline closed her eyes.
She thought she might be slowly dying from some debilitating fatal disease, an enemy that weakened her strength, not even letting her eat or sleep.
But just as she knew of the existence of the sun even when he was hiding behind dark clouds, she also knew what was happening: she was carrying a child.
Nobody heard anything.
No one said anything.
Evelline could not say anything.
It was as if it had never happened.
But yes... It happened.
''I do not want this baby'' was the thought she carried within itself.
She was afraid to hate the child, to remember how it was conceived every time she looked at it.
It.
She would have to carry that thing, put it in the world, and find some way to tolerate its existence. Others would care and create the baby. Evelline just had to carry it, though even that was difficult. But she could never love it.
No, no.
It was not supposed to be like this.
The children had cost her too much. She cursed the brutal act that had planted the seed in her womb and forever despised the man who abused her, assaulted her, destroyed her. How could she not despise the child that would result from it?
She pressed her fingers against her eyelids, remembering the days of her childhood in her old village, wishing she could return to that simpler time.
She felt she was slowly dying inside. Alfred had noticed the melancholy of his lover, but after several attempts to talk to her, the only answers he had were complaints of headache. At last, King's duties spoke louder and he finally gave up on disturbing his wife with his endless questions.
Hvitserk was still incarcerated, but after Evellíne had personally asked Alfred to find out how he was being treated, and seeing that the boy was well, the girl decided to give him some space at least for now. Her life was a mess and she couldn't even focus on herself. Plus she didn't want to deal with Judith's paranoia once again. But Evellíne would find a way to help him somehow.
Aethelred departure due to a trip in search of a Danish ship that had been shipwrecked was just an excuse. According to him, "finding them is the high priority."
Bastard.
Deep down, even after threatening to kill her if she said anything, he was obviously afraid Alfred would find out because he knew his brother would not be merciful.
