*TRIGGER WARNING*

Evelline barely slept. Even though she felt safe in Alfred's arms, everything she experienced in Kattegat echoed in her mind.

Besides, Margot's intrusive presence disturbed her. Maybe it was just stupid insecurity, but the fact that the woman was still at Wessex was too odd.

If the princess had returned, what Margot still doing there?

Tired of the unbearable succession of questions that bothered her mind, she took advantage of her husband's deep sleep; and that the sun was barely out; and went alone into the garden to take a breath. But all she could do was walk back and forth in circles, full of doubts and fears.

The princess decided she needed to find some way to talk to Hvitserk, to know how he was being treated. She longed to see him, talk to him and listen to his opinion, to find some peace of mind.

However, when she noticed in the distance that some soldiers were already awake on patrol, she hastily crept back into the royal hall. She sneaked down the hallways from room to room so no one could see her.

As she lay back on her bed, she noticed that Alfred was still asleep. She clung to him, calming down a little from her nervousness.

The king moved lazily, opening his eyes with difficulty because of the brightness of the sun rising slowly outside the windows.

When he saw Evelline's face, he smiled.

"Good morning," he caressed the girl's cheek. "Why are you up so early, my dear?" It's everything alright? You seem worried ...''

The princess swallowed dry. At the same time she wanted to tell him about Margot and Hvitserk, she thought she might have to wait a little longer.

But the way Alfred made her feel free to talk about any subject, about anything, gave her the courage to say it.

"I apologize for giving you so much trouble so early," she cleared her throat. "I need to tell you something."

The King's eyes widened, intent.

Evelline sat on the bed, and he followed her, sitting down too.

"It's about your mother ... She thought I was dead." She took a deep breath. "And without a second thought, she found someone to replace me as a princess ... but especially as your wife."

Alfred looked shocked as if he did not believe his mother had been capable of such wickedness.

"How ... How do you know that, my dear? Did she tell you that?!''

"No ... and it was not even necessary. The way they both looked at me... It gave me chills. I know I'm not wrong about this. I had a gut feeling''.

Alfred's expression changed from confused to irritated. How could Judith have even dared to think that after Evelline's death he would be able to marry again?
