Standing on top of a hill above Kattegat, Alfred was impatiently waiting. A few meters ahead, the black smoke from the bonfire lit by Ivar's soldiers darkened the sky.
It was now or never.
Bjorn and Ubbe had already traced the exact route that the soldiers would take, but as a precaution, they split up on two separate paths for the ambush to be succeeded. Alfred and Aethelred's men hid inside the forest to give full support during the attack.
A hunter never expects the prey to become the predator.
Alfred would kill them one by one, and treat them with the same courtesy they had treated his people, and the princess.
Minutes passed by until they waited almost an hour as dusk descended.
Then, suddenly, Bjorn saw the first soldier approaching in complete silence, motioning with his hands for the rest of the group to follow.
One of Ivar's soldiers, a fat short man, noticed Bjorn's presence, ruining the surprise attack, but still leaving them at a great disadvantage.
''ALL HAIL KING IVAR!'' he shouted as he ran towards the Saxons.
Two arrows hit him in the chest.
About twenty or so Northmen's went out one by one from the forest, all wielding swords and axes, staring at the King and the Lothbrok brothers.
Less clumsy than in the previous battles, Alfred was finally able to kill one of them without the assistance of his older brother. Bjorn and Ubbe fought hard, digging their axes into the men's skulls without mercy.
One of the Viking's superficially cut Aethelred's arm, and the sound of Aethelred screams ended up calling his brother's attention. Distracted, Alfred didn't notice the presence of one of the Northmen, who slashed him with a shield, leaving him lying on the ground, dizzy.
Slightly stunned by the fall, the King rose and drew his fallen sword close to him.
The man immediately attacked, with his sword raised with the ferocity of a man who knew that his life was at risk.
Alfred ran forward and struck the blade in the direction of the attacker's head, cutting his face. The man mumbled, dropped his sword, and drew a sharp dagger from his belt, aiming at the King's chest. In a shrewd move, Alfred managed to dodge the dagger.
Now, the man came to Alfred with an ax, nailing him to his armor. But the armor was too heavy for the weakness of the ax material, which slipped through the metal, causing the Northmen to lose his balance. Taking advantage of the opportunity, Alfred voraciously cut off the enemy's neck. From afar Aethelred watched his brother proudly.
Soldier after soldier fell dead to the ground, all defeated, whereas in the side of Alfred, only two of the warriors were fatally hit.
As night fell, Bjorn led the way, giving a fierce battle cry.
