Thankfully the Avers' car was big. It was easiest for Willow to face the wall and ignore everyone else.
Kit kept on sending her looks that he clearly thought was inconspicuous, but weren't, and Sloane kept glaring at her without trying to be inconspicuous.
Why had she done that? She had no idea how Henry would react. Why....
The Avers' mini van jolted to a stop.
"Shit." Avers muttered. There were police cars everywhere and sirens wailing. "You two know the drill." he said. "Kit, protect the extra baggage."
Willow bristled slightly.
Sloane jumped out of the car and opened the trunk. It was lined with various weapons and spray painted with symbols. Willow was mildly impressed.
"Kit, hand me the fake IDs. Give me the FBI one."
Willow stared at him.
"You do what you have to sweetheart" Avers said.
"Come on" Kit said, picking up a shotgun. "We'll stay out of the way."
Willow watched as Avers strode up to the police flashing his fake badge. Willow had to admire his confidence. If it was her she would have tripped three times and dropped her badge.
"Why do you use fake badges?" Willow asked as Kit led her off to the side.
"It's safer. Badges get us into places that we wouldn't normally be able to get into." Kit said. "And monsters can be smarter then they look. It's safer to use fake names."
"Is your name actually Kit?" Willow asked.
"No." Kit said. Willow stared at him. "It's actually Atticus. Kit's a nickname."
Willow laughed. "Oh, ok then."
A thick silence fell between them. Kit stuck his hands in his pockets and looked at the ground. Willow looked over towards the cafe where the cops were swarming. According to Avers there had been dozens of demon possessions and attacks.
Suddenly Sloane came running over. "Kit we need to get her out of here."
Kit looked up. "What why?"
"They weren't just demon attacks." Sloane said, grabbing Willow by the arm roughly. "We need to get her in some kind of protection."
"Leave her." a gruff voice said. Avers came striding over.
"Dad what's going on." Kit asked. It wasn't a question, it was a statement.
"It's not important, what is important is drawing that thing out of whatever hole it's in."
"What is it?" Kit asked, running to keep up with his father's long strides.
"Well we weren't wrong." Avers said. "It is a demon, a tough one too. That's what caused all the cafe drama. A strong demon can posses a person without actually entering a vessel. One of the hell bastards grabbed some poor guy and had him stab a woman. Whatever's in there is long gone."
"So what are we so worried about?" Kit asked.
"The other thing that was here. Even a starving demon couldn't destroy that many souls. I should have known. Those souls weren't taken, they were traded." Avers said, running a hand through his hair. He looked...worried, Willow realized with a pang.
"Don't demons trade?" Kit asked.
"Don't be stupid." Sloane said. "Demons don't trade like this. Remember those power fluxes? All of those reported fainting spells? That wasn't a demon."
