I snuggled down in my warm bed, not wanting to get up. I had been up until 5am with a mission last night and I was exhausted.
Sunlight seeped through the open windows, a cool breeze brushing my cheeks and making me shiver. I ducked down still further under the covers so that only my head was visible anymore.
I sighed, wishing I could stay like that forever but just then,
We're soaringg, flying
There's not a star in heaven that we can't reach
If we're trying
Yeah we're breaking free ooohh"Shut up!" I chucked my pillow across the room to where my phone was vibrating wildly. I slipped down still further under the covers until I was completely immersed in them, not a toe peeking out.
My phone continued to ring and finally I gave up. I rose from bed slowly and trudged over to my phone, zombie style. I had a habit of not being able to get up in the morning so I always placed my phone on the other side of the room so that I would be forced to get up to turn the bloody alarm off.
This wasn't an alarm though, and I dragged a hand through my hair, reaching my phone and swiping accept call before bothering to check who was calling.
And before you ask, yes, my ringtone was High School Musical.
"Hello?" I said into my phone sleepily.
"Agent Miller." A crisp, sharp voice came to me over the phone.
"Oh hey boss." I answered, yawning hugely.
"What took you so long to answer, Miller?" she ignored my greeting.
"I was in bed." I answered, gazing longingly at my bed, no doubt still toasty warm under those covers.
"Miller, it's 1PM." she said sharply. I checked the time. Oh yeah, it was.
"Well I was up all night on a mission boss, cut me some slack."
"I will. You and Agent Cole are no longer required to work for our agency until -"
I dropped the phone. No way. Was she firing me? She couldn't. My hand went to the delicate silver starfish necklace aground my neck, enclosing it in my palm protectivly.
I slowly knelt down and picked up the phone again.
"You're firing me?" I whispered.
"What?" Laughter erupted from the other end of the line.
"What's so funny?" I snapped, pretty dang close to tears.
"Miller, you're not fired. I'm giving you and Agent Cole a break. Miller, you're on vacation. For the entire summer break." My boss told me once she had stopped laughing.
"Wait really?" I said.
"Yes, really." her voice softened. "Look, you're 17 Miller. You can't exactly work 365 days a year."
"I did last year." I pointed out. This time, the voice that came to me over the phone was more impatient.
"Yes, you did, and the result was a screaming fit of exhaustion on Christmas during a mission and scaring the robber you were catching senseless."
"Point taken." I nodded.
"So I'm allowed to do ..."
"Anything you want. Except anything stupid, reckless, or unsafe." she said. "Miller you do know what a vacation is right?"
I shrugged.
"It's been a long time since I've had one boss, I'm not really sure what it's like being on vacation." I said matter of factly. There was a pause.
"Look, just don't get into any trouble and outside of that do anything you want. Anything at all, ok? Have some fun, Shannon."
I smiled at her calling me by my first name, something she rarely did. It was always 'Agent', 'Miller', or 'Agent Miller'.
"Thanks." I said.
"I will not be contacting you for 2 whole months. Have fun, Shannon."
Boss hung up, and I knelt there for a while, processing what I just heard. When I had managed to get a grip of what she was saying to me, I squealed and immediately called Abby my best friend and partner in missions.
"Hello?" she answered after two rings.
"Abbywe'regettingabreakforrtwowholemonthswehaveabsolutefreedomfortwo.whole.months!!" I spoke so quickly my words blurred together. Abby was used to this and was able to understand instantly.
"I know! This is freaking amazing Shan! What shall we do?"
"Oh! My grandma owns a cafe at Sundown Beach, she'll probably let us stay with her for the summer if I ask!"
"Yes! That would be sooo cool." Abby laughed.
"I'll ask to see if it's ok with her." I promised before hanging up.
