When I opened my eyes again, there was a crowd of concerned faces staring down at me. I met the worried eyes of Abby, Grandma, Samantha, and even Jacob and Lily.
"Oh thank God you're awake." Samantha sighed in relief and slumped back in her chair, and although everyone else looked visibly at ease too, there was a thick tension in the air that I couldn't ignore.
Jacob and Lily looked thoroughly shaken up while Grandma muttered a few select words before going to fetch a doctor. Abby, who'd also slumped back, had that look in her eyes that meant something was seriously wrong.
Of course, something was seriously wrong as I'd just been stabbed twice, but I got the gut feeling that she was upset about something else too. Stupidly, I attempted to sit up, which resulted in a jarring pain in my stomach area.
"Oww that hurts like a bitch." I groaned.
"Are you an idiot or are you an idiot?" Abby asked, jumping to her feet but I assured her I was fine.
I scanned the faces in the room again, frowning when I noticed an absence.
"Hey where's Max?" I asked, and just like that, the tension in the room doubled.
No one would meet my eyes, and Jacob and Lily left after rambling something about couples' therapy.
"He's been really gassy and we've been arguing about it a lot." Lily informed me.
"Hey! I mean, yeah, it's a huge issue and we have an appointment for couples' therapy so yeah - hope you get better soon Shannon, we'll be back again to visit, yeah?" Jacob babbled. Then both of them hurried out.
"Okay, what's going on?" I questioned, an eyebrow raised. Samantha seemed reluctant to be the bearer of bad news and looked over at Abby expectantly, who gave a big sigh and eased into the conversation.
"Well, you remember Max always had that knife on him? The one he used to cut the dolphin free? Um, the knife hadn't been removed from the second wound and it was his freaking knife, plus when the police finally got here and tried to track Max down to talk to him about it, he was gone. Full on disappeared, the police did a whole ass search but he hasn't turned up yet."
On second thought, she dropped that bomb with practically no warning and watched anxiously as I stopped functioning. Really? The one guy I start to trust and maybe even like after the whole Jack Cortez business, and this happens?
No.
I shook my head.
"It could have been a similar knife. You don't know, you've never seen it up close, I want to actually see the knife-"
"Shannon honey, Max's mum confirmed it was his knife." Abby said. Samantha looked severely uncomfortable, and I wouldn't have been surprised if she made a run for it as I sat there with my mouth hanging open, wondering what the hell I was supposed to do now.
"Are you sure?" I asked in desperation, but Abby nodded.
"No, no it can't be, I can't-"
"I'm sorry." Abby murmured.
