He sighed and motioned me to follow him.
"Wait here." I commanded Carla.
I followed him. We reached a hall with cells; empty cells. I gazed around as we walked. As we approached his cell, my eyes widened. His cell was next to the glass wall I saw in my dream. I looked down into the room. On one side of the room was a noose on a pole and on the other side was an electric chair. I looked away from the room and watched as the officer unlocked Lucifer's cell. He lied there on the bed, peacefulness spread across his face. I walked in as the officer closed the door behind me. Once it was shut, he stood with his back on the cold cement wall.
I walked over to him slowly. I kneeled down next to him and put my right hand on his uncovered cheek. I stroked his hair, and his eyes fluttered open.
"Yvette," he exclaimed, sitting up immediately. When he sat up, he hit his head on the bottom of the bunk above him; I stifled a laugh. "Ow-What're you doing here??"
"We came to bail you out, but they won't let us." I spoke calmly.
We sighed in unison. It was quiet. I whispered to him.
"Hold on for a second."
I got up and approached the officer.
"Please. . .let him go home. We need him there. My uncle wouldn't do anything to harm anyone."
"Well, your uncle has to stay here until proven innocent."
"I'm not leaving without him!" I yelled.
I instantly regretted saying that statement. He locked me in the cell!
"Then stay in there." He walked away from me.
"You might not have a job tomorrow!" I called after him. He laughed. I immediately sank to my knees, my head turned to the ground.
"Ugh! Idiot!!" I screamed at myself. "Why can't I be selfish and not selfless?!"
Then a gentle hand was on my shoulder. I turned and basically tackled him, wrapping my arms around him. I accidentally knocked him onto his back with me tight in his arms. I was shaking, scared as ever.
"You shouldn't hate yourself, Yvette. It was foolish on you, but your heart was in the right place." I sighed and he spoke again. "I'm just glad I'm with you. I only wish it wasn't like this."
"I do, too."
Then Carla came running. I knew it was her because she called my name. When she found us, I immediately pointed her away.
"Don't. Just go." She did as I commanded.
Then I thought about something and chuckled at it.
"What?" He asked, confused.
"We're basically breaking the law just being in here together." I whispered.
He smiled a bit, got up, and went to the 'bed' and lied down once more. I opened my purse, got out my fully charged phone and my earbuds, and scrolled through my music. I didn't like bunk beds so I curled up next to him. Then I felt myself drift off to sleep. He pulled a blanket over the two of us. I felt my phone and earbuds disappear.
I was warmed by not only the blanket, but by his arms. I wanted to stay awake, so I tried to sit up but he wouldn't let me.
"You were up late last night from all the chaos. Sleep. I'm not going anywhere."
I trusted him, so I let myself sink into him, allowing my eyes to shut. I don't know how long I slept, but as I was waking up, I felt Lucifer's whispers in my hair.
"Wake up, Yvette." He said softly.
"Why?" I complained.
"Because you've been asleep since seven forty this morning. It's four fifteen in the afternoon."
My eyes shot open. "What?!"
"Don't be upset. I'm glad you got some sleep."
I groaned. Then my phone buzzed. I picked it up from the floor and looked at it. Blaze had texted me. He said he was bringing the best lawyer he could in order to get us out. I smiled and showed Lucifer the text message. He smiled as well, hugging me tight.
We waited for an hour for Blaze and the lawyer. When they arrived, we were taken to the lobby where a man was talking to the officer at the front desk.
"The girl didn't do anything, and neither did Jones! Lock up the one who gave you false information!"
"It was not false information, Mr Carlson!"
"You put blame on an innocent man!"
"Mr Carlson is right," I spoke up and put a hand on Lucifer's arm. "He didn't kidnap me. I was being dramatic. The blame is on my part. I caused the trouble, but Ms Samson made the problem more troublesome than it should have been."
Mr Carlson smiled and turned back to the officer.
"She has admitted her fault, and I respect that, but what proof is there?"
"The proof, officer McCarty, is the girl! She was in the car, she experienced all of this and she has confirmed the situation!"
"Mr Carlson, this is not a court. If you wish, I can schedule one for you."
"Chief Oliver said it was today at five fifteen." Lucifer remembered.
"Well, then," Officer McCarty said. "Problem solved."
I sighed. Lucifer's arm was wrapped around my shoulder, as if he really was my uncle. He played the part very well. It was four thirty. We had to be at the courthouse by four fifty. Chief Oliver made us ride with him. Everyone else drove behind us. Once we arrived we were escorted in. I was identified as the victim and he as the accused. A security guard approached Lucifer, Carla, and myself with a book. He went through us one by one. Lucifer put his right hand on the book.
"Lucifer A Jones, do you promise to tell the truth and nothing but the truth?"
"I promise." Then I put my right hand on the book.
"Yvette Perez, do you promise to tell the truth and nothing but the truth?"
"I promise." The Ms Samson put her hand on the book.
"Carla Samson, do you promise to tell the truth and nothing but the truth?"
She hesitated. Taking a deep breath she managed to choke out her answer.
"I promise."
The trial started, and Mr Carlson said the same thing he said to Officer McCarty.
I was called to the stands and questioned. I told them exactly what happened, except I left out the fact that he killed Zander. I explained my foolishness and that Carla was blaming an innocent man for my doings. Then, she was called to the stands and I went back to my seat.
Mr Carlson questioned her.
"Did you call the police on this man?"
"Yes, but I-"
"What is the reason of you doing so?"
She hesitated, looked around, and pointed straight at me.
