CHAPTER 17
"Bye, mom. I will be home before midnight." Rosalynn said as she placed a swift kiss on her mother's cheek. "And please tell dad not to wait up for Archer with his inventory."
"Alright, I will tell your father." Arisa smiled knowing what her daughter meant. Whenever Rosalynn come back from a long date, Jonathan, her father, would be waiting for her date outside the door to come and have a talk with him. During their 'talk', he have a drink with the man and doesn't forget to mention about his substantial gun collection, how he likes to hunt, and what he likes to do to the man who breaks his daughter's heart, especially with the heart breaker's southern area.
*Arriving into the Flambeau River State Forest entrance*
"Out you go ma'am." Ryan, who was seated in the passenger side, being the mock-polite gentleman he is, quickly climbed out to escort his beautiful date, Samantha, out of the car.
"And here you go, Rosalynn." Ryan offered her his hand and she climbed carefully out of Juneau's car, hoping she doesn't trip and accidentally rip her dress.
"Thank you, Mr. Hurst." Rosalynn and Sam giggled. Rosalynn turned to face the entrance to the forest and was struck by its decorative beauty. Brightly lit lanterns colorfully decorated the pathway to the festival. Unlike the grass she was used to from her school grounds and home, it had been freshly cut and twinkled as the light of the lanterns was absorbed by the freshly condensed dew. The smell of popcorn, cotton candy, hot dogs, and other delicious food flavors roamed about her nose causing her stomach to give off an embarrassing rumble as they made their way through the entrance onto the field.
Small, square tents, which closely resembled circus tents were scattered about the area. Amongst the ground area, many invitees were already keen on dancing with their escorted partners. The soft music of the violin had the dancers swaying to its tune, like a snake to its charmer.
"Wow." All three gasped out at the same time. "It's beautiful." Rosalynn gasped out.
"Oh god. It's almost 8:00. Guys, have fun. But, keep it to a limit." Upon hearing the loud yet melodic chime of a clock reminding it had almost made a full round had Rosalynn checking her wrist watch and rushing to their rendezvous point. She remembered their promised destination; under the large willow tree in the back of the forest. Only two minutes until the clock chimed eight.
"I'm going to be late." Rosalynn sighed as she walked toward the edge of the forest. With a sudden idea, she bunched up the corners of her dress quickly, and ran fast as she could with her pair of heels. On the way, few men made passes at her. Inviting her to dance, to have a drink with them, but she was too busy worrying about being late to meet Archer, to even acknowledge the rather thoughtful invitees. She felt confident considering the beautiful rose gold masquerade mask hid her face. No one here will have the slightest idea of who this fair maiden was.
"A large willow tree. Where?" Rosalynn looked around the area after stopping at a slight stream. The cool trickle of water calmed the raging blisters gained by wearing the heels. She quickly took off the hindering contraption from her feet and tossed them aside, under a tree, hidden to the human eye. She made a quick memo in her head to pick them up after the festival. It was Archer's gift after all and she did not want to take advantage of that. Plus, no one is really going to notice her barefoot from under her long dress.
