Part 4

Asleep

My eyes suddenly flickered wide open as I startled myself awake from a horrific dream. I shook my head gently to trash out all the unpleasant memories. There is nothing to be afraid of as we are living in a terrible nightmare every day of our lives. My eyes darted to the corner of my cell room as I saw a figure standing there. I squinted to get a clearer view of the figure. Daryl stepped out of the shadows. I sighed in relief. "I heard you scream in your sleep." He mumbled softly. I bite my lip. "Are you ok?" He added. My lips pursed together as I nodded. "Did.... Did I wake you up?" I asked. He shook his head. "Nah. I was awake before." He grunted. "So your alright?" He mumbled again. I nodded. "Good." He grunted. Daryl swung his black crossbow over his broad shoulder and he headed along the corridor. My legs swung over the damp bed. I realised that my palms were sweaty and my hair was matted down against my scalp. I pulled on my dusty boots and quickly combed my hair and started to walk down the corridor. I stepped into the dining hall. My survival crew were chatting around small groups of tables while thy were munching on some food. Ricks eyes immediately darted towards me and he jumped out of his chair and swiftly walked towards me. He put a hand on my shoulder and studied my murky eyes. "Morning -" he interrupted me. "Daryl said you were screaming in your sleep... Your ok?" He swiftly asked. I could feel Ricks fingers twiddling around in my knotted hair. "Rick, I'm fine. Just a bad dream." I gently smiled. "So is there any plans for today?" I blandly asked. "Well we need to go on a supply run. You in?" He casually replied. I nodded my head. He pursed his lips together. "Meet me outside when your ready." He smiled and headed along the corridor. My eyes suddenly glimpsed at the food. "Morning Ray." I looked up to see Glenn picking a buttered bagel from the wooden basket. "Good morning." I casually replied. I decided on a boring cereal bar and a jug of orange juice. I swiftly flushed down on the fluid and started to munch on the breakfast. I got sweet smiles from the rest of my crew as I headed along the corridor. "Oh. Morning Ray." Carol slowly said. I paused. "Good morning." I replied. "Have you got any clothes you want me to wash?" She sweetly asked as she looked at my blood sprayed t shirt. I giggled. "Ugh... You can wash this one when I get back." We exchanged smiles and I joined Rick and Daryl outside of the prison fences. Daryls motorbike roared to life and he raced down the silent road. I hopped in the car with Rick as we followed Daryl. The ride was quick and silent. I was too tired to start a conversation so I just studied the tall, brown shoots that bloomed out of the dry soil. The car halted to a stop and we hopped out and entered the store. "Grab what you can." Daryl mumbled as he walked past kids toys. I nodded and headed for the food aisle. My eyes studied boxes of food. Frozen food won't be good as we can't unfreeze them. I collected a bag of bread and boxes of cereal. A stall of jewellery was placed at the back of the wall. I glided towards it and studied all the beautiful gems and sparkling chains. I leaned towards a necklace with a sapphire gem and a silver chain. It was beautiful. A metallic clutch surrounded the sapphire. The jewel was an ocean blue with swirls of aqua. It reminded me of Ricks eyes. My hand touched the gem and the box started to move. A snapping walker rose from under the stall. A rotten hand grabbed my ankle. Blood oozed out of its empty eye sockets. His black teeth snapped together at the smell of flesh. I panicked and struggled to grab my weapon. I could hear Ricks voice. "Ray!" My body collapsed onto the floor and my dagger stabbed into the side of my stomach. I heard a powerful gunshot and my eyes immediately closed. Everything went black.
