Chapter 18 – Through Theo’s Eyes

Sonia bit her lip, and rested her head on his shoulder. Theo wrapped his arms gently around her middle, holding her close. She could feel his chest rise and fall as hers hammered in its cage. She watched as their breath fogged up the windows.

“What are we?” Sonia let the words slip out of her mouth in a heavy whisper before she could stop herself.

Theo turned to the fogged up windows, the air between them was thick with an unexplainable silence. He felt her chest rise and fall pressed against his. Theo let out a heavy sigh, trying to form words that could answer her question.  He watched the fog clearing up a bit as his mind did to. He knew in that moment what he wanted. He wanted Sonia. He wanted her silky chestnut hair, her chocolaty eyes, and her soft, delicate lips. It was all her, every part of her. He wanted to be her 6am wakeup call and her midnight goodbye. The way she made him feel was euphoric. Like a high which he couldn’t come off of. Theo untangled his arms from around her torso and placed them on her hips, he turned to face her, a small smile on his face. Sonia watched his eyes, her hair was tousled all over the place and her lips just parted slightly.

Her eyes were filled with something he had never seen in them before. Did she want the same things he did? He cradled her face in his hands and brought her face down towards his so that their noses were brushing each other. She closed her eyes as the corners of her mouth perked up at his touch. He could see her long, thick lashes and the faint pink tingle disappearing fast from her cheeks, her steady breathing. He held her like that for a moment taking in her natural beauty before closing his eyes and gently rubbing their noses together. The moment of peace didn’t last long as a small giggle cut through the air. Her giggle was infectious. Sonia brought her face up and covered her mouth with her hand, trying to stifle the giggle. Theo wondered what was so funny.

“It tickled.” She whispered; her voice small and childlike. They let their hands drop off to the sides as Sonia rolled off him, placing her head in his lap and her feet tucked under her.

“What do you want to be?” Theo reached out for her hand and played with her fingers before kissing each of her fingers tips lightly. He felt her body shiver next to his as butterflies erupted in his stomach.  Sonia stayed silent. “I can be anything you want me to be.” Sonia pulled away her hand immediately and sat up turning around so fast to face him he had to put his hands out just to steady her in case she fell. She looked at him with a bewildered expression, her eyebrows raised and her eyes wide and awake. Everything inside him collapsed as he felt he had said something wrong. Panic had started to creep up on him before Sonia snapped him out of daze.

“Did you just quote The Notebook?” Her words came out in a rush as her bewildered expression slackened and was replaced with amusement. Theo opened his mouth to deny it firsthand but he couldn’t shake the feeling she was right. He had only seen the movie once with his Julia and his brother while they were at Julia’s family’s lake house and got snowed in. Theo stuttered some incomprehensible words which caused Sonia to burst out laughing and soon enough he joined her, their bodies shaking and tears threatening to spill out of their eyes. It wasn’t even that funny, but being in each other’s presence was enough.

Once their laughter died down, Theo’s decision was as clear as the window’s. Theo pulled Sonia up onto his lap, so that her right side was pressed against his chest, she didn’t hesitate to stop him. She shifted slightly on his lap so she could rest her head on his shoulder comfortably. He kissed the top of her forehead.

“Look at me, darling.” Sonia complied; she looked into his eyes expectantly. Theo leaned in and kissed the spot behind her ear before slowly working his way up so that he was nibbling the top of her ear with his lips. He pulled away for a second, to whisper in her ear. “Be my girlfriend.” It wasn’t a question, it was a statement. Sonia let out a gasp as her body relaxed as fast as it had tensed up. She turned to face him, a smile tugging at her mouth before she too leaned in close to his ear.
